08 novembre Is there such a thing as a "normal" week?
Wow! Two weeks in a row I am blogging. Go me! It was a busy week at work, a bit stressful, but still enjoy working at the store. As I said last week, Mr. & Mrs. Boss went to a trade show in Calgary. I got by grinding the hamburger with out any injuries. Kept the meat and produce coolers looking presentable. A couple glitches in our plans though. 1) If I ran out of anything from Tuesday’s order I could always order from our other supplier on Thursday. This didn’t happen. Mr. Boss knew before he left that this this company would be closing down in the next couple weeks but all of a sudden I found out it was closing Saturday and our sales rep called and told me there wasn’t much sense in ordering as it was all but cleared out. Our store is “Clover Farm” a low rung on the big corporation of “Sobeys“. 2) Mrs. Boss had the schedule for the week to make sure I had lots of help for the freight order to come in this coming Tuesday. I was informed by the truck driver that because Wednesday is Remembrance Day the all the delivery days would change. Ours is coming tomorrow. So that leaves me with one clerk who’ll be mostly on cash. So "Moi" will be left to put away most of the order. Only it wouldn’t hurt to be left ‘til Tuesday if I can’t get it done on Monday. I will also be busy with doing up the new produce and grinding fresh burger etc. that will arrive with Monday's order. Also I usually send my order on Monday for Tuesday delivery but had to do it Friday, guessing how much will sell over the weekend, especially the cigarettes. Oh well all will turn out when the real bosses come back on Tuesday and I will resume my role as grocery manager only and let Mr. Boss look after the meat and produce end of it. Thanks to the hardware man, Howard, who came to my side as butcher to cut up roasts & steaks. Mr. Boss I guess thought leaving me alone with a big bad grinder was enough without putting a great big sharp knife in my hands lol. Though I made it through the week at the store without injury not so cleaning my dad’s house on Wednesday afternoon. His cat, Patch, is a one person cat, Dad, but over the year she has been slowly letting me give her an occasional pat. Wednesday when I went to pat her she made a swipe at me, (she’s declawed) so when she does this I just put my hand palm down in front of her and she would smell it and that would be that. Not so this week. Without warning she grabbed my hand with her mouth and bit in with all her teeth as hard as she could. Boy did that hurt! My hand immediately swelled up I thought it was going to burst. That evening it was still swollen, red and bruised. Paul thought I should see the doctor but I figured what could he do but tell me to put on cold compresses (which I did at home) and ask about a tetanus shot (you can only get it every 5 years) which I figured I had about 4 years ago after infection from stabbing myself in the foot with a hundred year old pitch fork Paul’s grandfather used on the pig farm and I used for compost. Even Thursday night it was still inflamed and a bit swollen but today, though tender to touch is back to normal. Other than that it’s been a normal week. (what’s “normal” anyway?) Cleaned house yesterday and raked up 3 bags of leaves from the flower beds in the afternoon and two before church this am. We have “Island Waste Watch” this includes blue bag pick-up once a month, black bin (trash), and green bin (compost) every alternate week. Twice a year are big clean ups: fall and spring with Metal, Compost & Trash pick ups over a three week period. This coming week is compost. Leaves have to be in large paper recycling bags. Don’t know which day they will be in our area but at least I have a quite a bit done. A couple more beds and then all the needles around the trees if I have time, the weather’s good and I’m not to tired after work. Well Bible Study at seven and Desperate Housewives at 10 so I guess I’ll post this and have an afternoon nap before supper. What’s for supper? Good question, I’ll surprise Paul & I the last minute LOL 01 novembre Extra Hour Sleep?I don't really understand why when we change our clocks back that it is said we get an extra hours sleep. I have no problem falling asleep it's staying asleep after I have my early morning bathroom run. Yesterday, a Saturday, I forced myself to stay in bed 'til 5:30. Now this morning with the time change I tossed and turned 'til 4:30 and was so bored and restless I just got up and dressed. So after being awake for and hour it is still only 5:30. I mean this is a Sunday, lay iin bed until til I have to ready for an 11am church service! Sheesh!
On a positive note I finally have the time to blog and let all my dear friends in blog land know I am still here and alive. Working full time has really put a damper on my blogging time hasn't it? This week as Mr & Mrs Boss are gone to a trade show in Calgary I plan to put in a couple hours extra here and there at the store doing some extra work. Mr. Boss has delegated me to grind up hamburger and keep an eye out on the produce and meat. He knows I'm clumsy but I told him I'm may be clumsy but not stupid and will definitely not stick my hand in the grinder!
I told Mr. Boss about having a blogging buddy in Calgary I would love to visit if I was with them. He and Howard the hardware man at the store seem concerned that Curtis may not be who he said he is etc. etc. I said, "yeah, maybe he is a nineteen year old who is trying after a 55 year old woman...lol! Then Mr Boss asked to a have a special blogging name I go by. I felt silly when I told them yes, "flyladyfaye". It just seemed strange telling them about my "other life".
For those of you who followed my last blog...I went to town for one day and when I got home it was stiff with it's feet in the air. I felt really bad but also relieved, it was too much work and responsibility.
Closing for now but hope I can resume blogging on a more regular basis. Have a great Sunday everyone!
24 agosto Bill/Billie
Ayla was bad again. I was in the yard and a robin came swooping down all excited then took off to the big tree in the corner of our yard. First I thought an eagle was upsetting the neighbour hood birds then I thought...Ayla!...so I ran to the tree thinking she was up the tree, but the robin still chirping wildly darted back to the deck. Then I heard an answering cry under the deck. I struggled to get my "child bearing hips" through an opening all the while yelling at Ayla. Finally I found her with a baby robin behind a supporting beam. Will lots of yelling at her I was able to secure the baby robing and get it and me out from under the deck. The mother was still calling frantically to it's young. First I climbed chair and put the baby on the roof of the building, still the mother never came for him/her. Then I put it in the "Y" of an apple tree. It just stayed there with the mother flying between trees. Finally I gave up and took possession of the bird and realized it had a broken wing. To make this story shorter, now I have the responsibility of being "mother" to a baby Robin. I started by feeding it oatmeal softened with water from a baby spoon. After the first night when I realized it was going to live I gave it a name, suitably calling it Billie after Hurricane Bill that was underway, and "Billie" because not knowing it's gender gave it a more uni-sex name. I googled what to feed baby robins which were worms of course and fruit like strawberries & blueberries. Did you know they eat every 20 minutes to 1/2 hour?!! Billie has attached itself to me and now even "chirps" when it's hungry and last night I discover it will also chirp and call me just for company! So this morning after the storm has passed with out any power outages or major damage I was out in the drizzle digging up "breakfast" (and lunch and dinner and all the feedings in between) gathering up worms in the garden. We've accomplished the knack of feedings. At first I was nervous and thought Billie would nip my fingers. We had an awful mess of strawberries all over the cage (Alya's cat cage for vet trips) Billie looked terrible all red and sticky with strawberry juice and I also got some thrown on me. Now I've got it down pat and know how to stick fingers and food down Billie's throat and he/she gobbles it up. I can even pick it up, just put my hand up to his belly and he will hope right on my fingers. I think I am stuck for a long haul. Billie is still a baby with a broken wing. Haven't figured out what to do if the wing doesn't mend or how to "teach" it to fend for it's self. I began my first day of a week holiday (from the store only so I still work Monday & Friday mornings and Wednesday afternoon and my other part time jobs). So I'm heading out and must go feed Billie his second breakfast before heading out to work. Anybody do this before? (not work or vacation lol but look after a wild baby bird) Any & all advice would be appreciated! Have a great day. 27 luglio Fun Birthday( bright yellow field of Canola)
Well another filled weekend is over....time for a rest and return to work :)
Straightened up the house on Saturday morning, planned to garden in the afternoon but plans changed. Megan had come out the night before so in the afternoon we played "tourist" in visited some craft shops in the two communities. She never got time to shop for my Birthday gift so we had fun looking for "it". It turned out to be a crafted necklace, a pair of starfish earrings and the tiniest pewter cat ornament I have. Just the two of us hanging out was fun.
Before church on Sunday Homer and I went sea glass hunting. Last year I went twice a day most days but with a fuller work schedule and one car this was just my fourth time all summer!
After church was the big weekend event for me. As other years, it was the Northumberland Fisheries Festival. This year the Poker Run, always on Sunday to finished up the festival, happened to fall on my birthday. Almost everyone who has a boat, or a friend/relative with a fishing boat looks forward to this event. I have pictures from previous years just some changes in the people on Freddie's boat, some that were on last year weren't this year and vise versa. Perfect weather accompanied us the whole afternoon. The best part is when all the boats congregate at an inlet just referred to around here as "Cahoon's Wharf". Boats are anchored, ladders lowered and BBQs lite. Lots of swimming, laughter and eating. Only this year Paul brought my birthday cake. Of course there was no left over of this cake...Angel Food Cake with strawberries in the middle and some kind of delicious topping (all I know that there was whipped cream in it). It was nice to have all three of my children there and watch them in the water playing and horsing around like kids instead of mid twenties to thirty! Also present was Krista's BF Chris and our daughter in law, Adina alone with some other family members and our friends from NH and some of their family.
(after the Poker Run 2006)
To top it off, Chris inserted more RAM into my computer and now it just takes seconds to move from window to window. Before it took about 3-5 mins to open another blog or else it couldn't open at all! So a big thanks to Chris, my "personal" computer technician!
Have a great week everyone!
19 luglio Enjoying my summer...sorry for not posting :(I kind of took a little holiday from blogging/blog-walking. Sorry for any concerns. I have even been sleeping in instead of getting up early before work to blog walk...well if you call 6:30 or 6:45 sleeping in lol!
Since my last blog I've been busy, when not working, mostly in the garden. Chad and Adina (& Lexi) arrived a few weeks ago and are staying with us until they move into their apartment the 1st of August. Busy with two dogs and one cat and four adults coming and going all the time. The girls were out a couple times so there have been late nights talking and playing board games.
Friday night and all day Saturday I was able to mingle with many other Sea Glass enthusiasts and our first annual Mermaid Tears Sea Glass Festival. Just a 25 minute drive from my home too!
Tonight we have our commissioning service for our new church, now named "Memorial United". This is similar to a "grand opening". Many former ministers will be there so it will be nice to meet them after many years.
No guarantee, but I'll try to devote a bit more time here and visit all my dear blog friends I've neglected over the summer. Hope everyone is well and also enjoying there summer, rain or shine!
01 giugno Monday![]() Last week turned out to be a busy week for me. Mainly because of last Sunday when I opened my mouth to say "No" and it came out with "No but..."
After church, when we found out our minister would be away the next Sunday, the clerk of Session, Beth asked me if I'd do "Children's Time". Well I loved teaching Sunday School to the kids but don't like being in front of the congregation talking to the kids with all the adults listening in, I had a poor experience one time and this turned me off. Well, when she asked me I said "No...but I'll come up with something for the message". Where did this come from? It came from my mouth but not my head. I guess it really was God talking through me :) I had done the sermon a few times in the past and thought that's where it would remain...in the past. When I was working full time before I had plenty of notice and would work on it over a month in my spare time. Well this time I only had one week. This resulted in a lot of early morning writing all week before work. It's hard to believe...I'm not very long winded for sure...it took me 1 - 1/12 hours each morning and all I could come up with is a seven minute sermon. Our present minister is very long winded and it is usually 12:30 before we are through church. Yesterday we were out of there by 11:58 just two minutes short of noon. I had compliments on my sermon so I guess it wasn't too bad and people were happy to get out earlier on such a nice Sunday.
After lunch Paul left for an afternoon of golfing and I donned some my gardening clothes and other then the first "crop" of mosquitoes lunching on me I had a great afternoon relaxing my way by digging and pulling weeds and trimming bushes. It was like a summer day finally.
![]() In the evening we went over to our local Presbyterian church for a special service with most of the local churches participating. This is our second such service, the first was at our church and we'll be having these every month there is a fifth Sunday, rotating between all the churches involved. We had "the United Church of Canada" (mine), the Presbyterian, the Church of Christ in Murray River and another in Murray Harbour, the Baptist, and the Pentecostal. It was so hot in the old church with so many people! But by the time we were walking home the air was cool and chilly.
It must have rained quite a bit last night but I wasn't aware of it as I slept my first good night in a week and didn't hear it. We just had a short spell of hail a few minutes ago, it looked like someone sprinkled bits of Styrofoam on the deck.
One meeting this week and that is all I foresee other than work. My "baby", Megan, turns 25 on Wednesday, all my babies are now on there own and full fledged adults, sure make me wonder if I'm getting old though I don't feel old
Happy Birthday Megan!
Hope everyone has a great week! 24 maggio Trip to the nursery FridayFriday was a most interesting day. The morning, my home-care job, didn't go exactly as planned. Every minute counts to get things done in just an hour and a half. So this morning little things I didn't expect happened. The most annoying and time consuming was when the washer hose leaked (again) I had three loads to get dried, two of them to wash. The first load was already washed by the other lady that comes Tues. & Thurs. The second was the sheets I stripped from the beds, and the third was a blanket on the couch that the cat got sick on. Well the second load was in the washer when I went into the porch (where the washer was) to sweep the floor. I discovered water pouring out of a leak in the hose. This happened before and I remedied it with blue duct tape. So I had to stop the washer, pull up the hose to stop the water coming out, dry off the hose and fiddle around with the tape and wrap up the hose even farther. I suppose I'll have to get a new one and attempt to put it on myself...sigh.
That out of the way I had to rush and get dinner finished, the floors done, bathroom cleaned and I just couldn't leave with the beds stripped so had to make them up, fold the clothes and put away. A couple other problems surfaced but I can't go into. Anyway I did get everything that had to be done out of the way and grabbed the garbage and threw them in the bins out at the end of the lane.
By the time I got the mail and arrived home I had an hour, just to shower change and make and eat a toasted BLT. The night before (Thursday) I left a note to myself at the store what I wanted to get done on Friday. I immediately began replenishing the milk cooler. I was in the walk-in cooler getting the milk when Mr. Boss said we're leaving in half an hour. I assumed it was Mr & Mrs. Boss, so I asked where they were going, when he answered "No, you and I. We're going to the nursery in Montague to get our garden plants. So, there went my list right out the door :) It was great fun filling trays of plants, picking out what I thought would sell and Mr. Boss doing likewise. The best part I didn't have to foot the bill :) As we were leaving we stopped at Tim Horton's and he bought a coffee and I got my large Tim's Green Tea that I just love! I had my iTouch I got for Christmas so with a calculator on it I set to work on the drive home with the invoice and got our retail prices. I was already when we arrived back at the store to price them and make a sign when all the plants were unloaded and set up in the gazebo the guys erected in the morning. By this time it was 4:30 just enough time to top off the milk again, check the pop coolers and price a couple of cases of Island beef and chicken that came while I was away!
As they say "A change is as good as a rest", not sure on the rest part as I was pretty tired when I climbed into bed that night, but it was all in all and interesting day for a work day!
Some more garden pictures I took this morning:

16 maggio Long time blogging/walking..![]() I haven't been around visiting for such a long time nor updated my blog! My apologies for any concerns. I have just been busy with everyday life. Last weekend I was busy trying to get more painting done in the kitchen. Two windows took much longer than I thought and after that the weather was half decent so I took advantage of it and cleaned up a flower bed. Sunday, being Mother's Day, was filled. Megan had stayed the night, she came to church the next morning and Krista came with her boyfriend. The girls treated me after to a nice lunch at Pizza Delight, Dad and Paul joined us. Krista had picked up a bouquet of Tulips that Chad had wired. When we got back to the house Chad called to wish me a happy Mother's Day. It was late afternoon before the girls left. The next thing it was Monday morning and my work week began again.
![]() Herman asked if I'd post pictures of my Daffodils when they bloomed. (Last week I only had one lonely bloom) Now many of my Tulips bulbs I planted also last year are also in bloom. Mother's Day was also special as I had my first Humming bird of the season at my feeder. I know spring is really hear when I see them! Paul has given the lawn it's first cut, though he has been busy and hasn't done the trimming yet with the push mower.
![]() I will make this blog short as there isn't anything else going on in my life of interest other than work, eat, sleep...as I want to visit as many, if not all my friends before I get caught up in another day of house/garden chores!
Hope you are having a great weekend!
![]() 04 maggio Daffodil & Sunny weekendI have one daffodil in bloom with others ready to follow in a few days and the tulips are beginning to bud. Even the grass that was so slow to turn green is turning nice and lush. Paul has returned to golfing and I hate to bring it to his attention but it may even need a mowing in the next week! Saturday began out gloomy and wet so I started to paint the kitchen. I was tired of the dark, chocolate milk coloured walls and am painting them a fresh cream colour. I thought it wouldn't be much to do as we have lots of windows and cupboards. But as I progressed I realized that inside every cupboard and drawers will need to be to be painted also. I think this may turn into a summer project! I got one coat on most of the walls, after painting all around doors and windows from 9 am - 6 pm and still have one area, behind the washer, dryer and pantry cupboards to do. The kitchen is so disarrayed with everything taken down with most of the stuff on the kitchen table! I was exhausted by supper time so it was a trip to Brehaut's restaurant for take-out. Sunny proved out to be a beautiful, warm day. After church I decided not to paint but enjoyed an afternoon cleaning up one large bed. After two days of take-out I thought I better do some cooking and made dry garlic spareribs, fried rice and took some egg rolls out of the box. It all turned out really good. Paul went out for a bit in the evening so I laid down for an early evening nap before Desperate Housewives came on at 10. Today is going to be another fine day. I have the wash started, so it will be hung out to dry. Then off to work to begin another week. 27 aprile Spring has finally arrived!!![]() Finally I think spring has finally arrived! Saturday was very nice and warm yet I didn't get in the garden as I spent the day shopping. I got lots of nice summer clothes, now I am broke!
![]() Sunday we were having Krista, Megan and their boyfriends along with Dad for a BBQ. This was in celebration of Chris' and Steven's birthdays Saturday and Thursday respectively. I cleaned off the deck early in the morning in hopes to eat outside. It was so cold and raining when I was doing it. The weather got colder as the day progressed though and so windy we had to move the BBQ into the building and ate inside. Though things didn't go as planned we had a great time and after burgers, sausages, hot-dogs, salad and birthday cake we planned a fun game, new one that Krista & Chris brought. It was hilarious as we found out things we knew or didn't know about those around the table. I can't remember the name of the game, sorry.
![]() Today is nice again and the temperature is expected to go up to 12C. It is sunny and no wind so it looks to be a nice day and the week also sounds promising. The grass is beginning to turn green. My daffodils are budding and I am discovering where I planted my new tulip bulbs.
![]() Brehaut's, our only local restaurant, is opening for the season today so everyone, with exception to those who work there, are excited and it will prove to be a very busy day for them. Thursday is "setting day" when the lobster boats will be loaded and traps deposited to be hauled in on the 1st of May. Hopefully many will have their first feed of hot lobster of the season!
![]() Most of you have seen Susan Boyle on "Britons Got Talent" or heard of her anyway in the news. Our new church is equipped with an a large screen up front that we can view anything the Internet provides. For children's time we watched this video. The children were asked to watch the reactions of the judges and audience before and after her audition. Not a sound even from the youngest was heard as we watched. The minister then told the kids (and us) not to judge by outward appearances. It was really nice to see and even though I've seen the video before, my eyes still watered.
![]() Have a great week!
![]() Hugs, Faye 19 aprile Sunday Ramblings![]() Well spring is slow to arrive here. Still. Yesterday morning I had hoped that I it would be a nice outdoor day but the ground was white again. I was greeted with about and inch of crystallized snow. This wasn't white and fluffy, nor snowman snow, it was like the heavy frost in your freezer when it's time to clean it out. The day remained cold throughout. Homer's outside water dish was frozen solid not just a little early morning crust but one solid "cube".
Not much to report, it was a quiet week. My "big" happening was a fresh hair cut by my hairdresser and a colouring by my in-home colourist, Paul.
Since outside wasn't too promising yesterday I cleaned up the house in the morning then finally finished the remaining income tax. Now tomorrow I can send them and wait for my refund cheque.
![]() Oh yes, I also went through my drawers and closet. I now have more jeans, pants, Capri's, dresses, skirts etc. in a goodwill bag then I have in my closet. Paul has promised me a trip to town to shop as when the warm weather ever comes I have very little (other than a drawer filled with a large assortment of T-shirts) to wear. Only a couple of Capri's and all of the shorts I owned, including the new ones I got last year are way too big. I am left with one cotton summer dress, the dress from Chad & Adina's wedding, a black jumper/sleeveless dress, one black skirt and one brown for dressy clothes. So a shopping trip I need! Though the long range forecast calls for sun and warmer temperatures next Saturday I will have to forgo the garden and head to town. As I said before, I hate shopping but I can only go on Saturdays and though it will be an all day affair it will have to be done.
![]() Heading out to church...Paul and I are going to Montague to eat after church, haven't done that for a long time, something was always coming up: a meeting after church other plans so I am looking forward to a "lunch date" with my husband. Hope you have a great Sunday and super week! 12 aprile Happy Easter![]() Happy Easter Everyone!
Our weather has been a very mixed bag this week. Some days were almost as cold as winter but most of the snow has melted which I enjoy to see colours, though not bright yet are a change from all white!
Friday was an excellent day. The store was closed though I did go to my home-care job in the morning. Then I rushed through the housework and head out into the yard in the afternoon. I began to rack my flower beds. I was in the backyard. Here it is like a different zone. It got so warm and as I raked I began to peel off outer clothing so I was eventually down to my T-shirt! A big change from a week ago when I had to wear the whole winter garment of heavy coat, boots, hat & gloves!
Saturday was not as warm and since it looked like the weather was going to get colder as the day went on I finished raking the beds, front and back in the morning. The afternoon I just took it easy in the house. Megan came by to spend the night to help Paul with the pancake breakfast Sunday morning. The weather forecast didn't sound very good at all with a heavy snowfall warning so they planned to mix up the batter in the morning. A previous year it was mixed up the night before and we were stuck with gallons, literally, of batter when we had to cancel all services including the breakfast due to a big snowstorm!
Paul couldn't go to our sunrise service at 6am because he had to get ready for the breakfast at 8am. This left me alone to head out to our service. It was in a different place this morning, a home on the Northumberland Strait in High Bank. It has for many years been at Machon's point on the beach. The snow didn't come but it was raining quite heavy. Homer, (my Husky mixed dog for those who are new to my space), always comes with me but when I asked him to come in the car he just looked at me as if to say "Are you crazy?".
It was still dark due to the overcast skies as I headed out in the rain. Their were balloons at the end of the lane so I knew I had the right place. There were two lanes side-by-side. One looked less traveled so I took the second one. When I got done to the house it was in darkness but I saw any vehicles in the yard so pulled in. I was a couple minutes late so wondered where everyone was. I looked at the second lane that didn't look to healthy to drive down and figured they must have walked down to the beach front for our outdoor service. So with travel mug or tea I pulled up the hood of my coat and headed down in the rain first crossing a wet soggy field then walked for 10 minutes down this lane still not finding anyone or hearing any voices. I figured I was on a wild goose chase. It might have been a nice walk if it hadn't been so wet and still quite dark! I just hoped no coyotes were looking for an early morning snack.
Anyway I finally found a house which happened to be the right house. I was greeted to come inside. I guess I was called shortly before but had already left, that since it was raining so hard the service was at the church instead at 6:30. Well another lady who is on communion with me this morning came by as I was leaving and gave me a lift up to my car ( guess the road was more passable then it looked to me). By this time it was almost 6:30 and I was drenched and chilled so headed home instead of going to the church.
Paul and Megan had left for the church before I got home so it is quiet. Church isn't 'til 11 so I have plenty of time before I have to get ready to go. Anyway this gave me time to write this blog.
Hope you all have a blessed Easter! 05 aprile First Sunday in April![]() It was a long week that I'm glad is over. Monday morning I was fine for traveling out to the country. An expected snow storm didn't start 'til after I got to work at the store. Tuesday morning I ended up donning boots and all my winter clothes as I trudged through knee deep snow on unplowed roads. One snow plow was stuck just outside the village and another was broke down though main street had been plowed before hand.
![]() It wasn't 'til later I found out that my oldest daughter, along with her BF and another couple who were at a skiing trip in Nova Scotia had headed home just at the start of the storm. They were in a cabin and had not listened to the forecast having neither radio nor TV. As they started home the storm got worse. They were lucky to get stuck behind a snow plow. Chris said "all we need now is an ambulance behind us" and sure enough, not 15 min. later an ambulance drove up behind them. I'm glad I didn't know they were on the road in the storm until after they were safely home!
![]() Wednesday I went to the funeral home for Elmer's wake and Thursday the store was closed for most of the afternoon as we went as a body to his funeral. That was a hard time. His nephew did the eulogy. Since he lives in Ontario he hasn't been around much. His dad, Elmer only sibling lives in NS. He was amazed at how many came out to the funeral noting that he didn't know that so many people knew Elmer and wasn't even aware that that many lived in Murray Harbour.
Well driving out to the country on Friday morning I encountered the second worse fog I've driven in. Sometimes I couldn't even see one telephone pole ahead of me. It was a bit harrowing at times to say the least! But the fog proved a blessing as it lifted 'cause it ate up so much of the snow! Then Saturdays sun, warm temp and then heavy rain washed away so much more of the snow including the old snow. I was pleased to see that not only my crocus but shots of the new tulip bulbs were popping up.
This morning I saw and heard a flock of Canadian Geese over head. A sure sign of spring!
![]() My two girls, Krista and Megan along with Krista's BF, Chris are coming out for the day. They will also be at church this morning with us. We haven't seen Chris for quite awhile. He was at his parents for Christmas but planned to come out New Years. But New Years brought a big snow storm so we missed out on his visit at that time.
We will still probably get some snow but surely it won't last long and I will once again be able to get out into my garden. Yesterday afternoon was spent working at my dad's income tax. One down just two more to go and that job will be done for another year.
Hope you are having a great day no matter what the weather brings to your neck of the woods.
30 marzo Out on a limb...My "baby" Alya won't be a year for another few weeks. But she has grown so much! The little rascal is up in this old tree waiting for a bird or squirrel to come by.
![]() Here she is again.
![]() This is the view from my deck:
![]() But close by the house is some promise of spring:
![]() Monday, last week, was nice a warm and the snow was melting wonderfully, but by Tuesday morning we had more snow as a storm settled in with lots of snow and wind. It was afternoon before the plow made it up the side roads so I had to pull on my boots again as I trudged through snow and drifts over the tops of my boots. Again it turned nice and spring like later in the week. Saturday was beautiful! Alas...we are expecting another snow storm to blow in today with lots of snow and blowing snow, first we are supposed to get freezing rain and ice pellets.
Saturday I spent the morning sewing curtains for a puppet thingy for Mr. Boss for his church youth group. He didn't ask me, I offered, but it did take more time then I expected.
Later that afternoon I got the bad news we have been expecting for the last couple days. A former employee, friend who worked as "the hardware man" at our store "forever" up until his retirement 3 years ago passed away from cancer. He will be sadly missed. He was well known in the community not just at the store but he was sort of a handy man, if you had a problem with your pump or wiring he would come and fix things. Saturday afternoon our kitchen taps died so that water was pouring out under the sink. As Paul and I struggled to remove it I said, "We need Elmer" and if it had happened a few years ago that's who we'd call. I can't count the number of times he was at our house fixing our pump among some wiring. The store used to deliver propane years and years ago, Elmer got to know so many people even out in the country when he'd deliver their propane. He'll be sadly missed by many.
Hope you have a great week! 21 marzo Little signs that spring is on the way!![]() First I want to bring attention to a disaster that was averted. You could have been reading the news of a school massacre only for the actions of a 21 yr old from Winnipeg going to school in Montreal.
"J.P. Neufeld, a 21-year-old Winnipeg native, alerted authorities on Tuesday after he stumbled across a posting on a web forum from a student claiming he was going to burn down his school in Norfolk, England."
"Eventually, police and other contributors to the web forum tracked down information about a suspect and narrowed down the school. In less than an hour, police made an arrest." To read the entire article, go to this link: http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/03/20/concordia-student-forum-norfolk.html
All in all it was a quiet week. We had our first meeting on Wednesday night for our search committee for a new minister. Even the shows I look forward to watching weren't on due to some sports that's on. I think it's football? No Survivor on Thursday nor Ghost Whisperer last night...sigh. But that was about the extent of any "excitement" in my week. The temperatures have been hovering around freezing but no new accumulation of snow. Here it is the 20th of March and we didn't get our "St. Patrick's Day" storm which we often get either on that day or a few days following.
![]() There is actually a few hopeful signs of spring, nothing major but little things that make me realize that winter will come to an end.
1/ No storms in March nor any forecast to come. Maybe some small snow fall the first of the week but that will just help take away and/or cover the old dirty, crusty snow.
2/ Even the days when it is still below freezing, the sun has been warm enough to help the snow melt and run down the gutter. What a lovely sound!
3/ We even have a bit of red Island mud in non-grassy/paved areas! But not muddy enough that I can get the car up the old country lane I have to work at twice a week. This will come as the ground thaws more.
4/ I have a few crocus shoots coming up in that narrow space between house and snow banks and even have one purple crocus in bloom! It's neat to see it and then a few inches away is still a foot of snow!
![]() 5/ We've had one squirrel in the tree the corner of our lot that joins our neighbour. A great big old tree with branches spreading up and out. Well this one lone squirrel has been (I think the same one) playing in this tree for years, but yesterday when I was bringing in clothes from the line (another sign of spring) I thought I heard someone else's clothes line squeaking but as it progressed I realized and saw TWO squirrels having a great time chasing each other along it's branches and into the intertwined branches of other trees! So, if Alya doesn't realize they could be a potential lunch, we may have a family come spring.
6/ I haven't had on my winter boots for a week now. Though with March not quite over I won't pack them away yet!
![]() Of course I have lots of "plans" for the day but Saturday doesn't have any more hours than the rest of the week days so only a small portion will be done. Don't worry, I won't be bored
Whatever is going on in your corner of the world....
![]() 15 marzo Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda![]() I have no idea were the time goes. Here it is Sunday afternoon and I am just beginning to blog! All week I make plans of what I'll do on the weekend. I even decided to cut back/hurry the necessary housework so I can get down and do these "things". My list barely has a line through it. I did get around to visiting most of you. I had to make a hard decision...I had to take some friends off my regular "route". Not to say I won't be by...but not as often. These were mostly ones that rarely come by but I have been dropping by regularly to their blogs. I feel bad but I also feel bad that I can't get around to everyone and figure if I cut back that this will give me more time to visit my closer and devoted friends more often. I give myself a guilt complex if I can't get by to visit regularly. Not much happened besides work either. Though I got to my regular Tuesday night ASL class all else I remember is finishing a book of short stories, "Ordinary Life", and today I finished a short novel, "Durable Goods", by the same author, Elizabeth Berg. Other than that my early mornings and evenings seemed to vanish somewhere.
![]() Which leads up to my blog I've planned on talking about....
Woulda' Coulda' Shoulda'
![]() I lay in bed, a weekday morning, it is early and I have a few hours before work considering I get up at 5:30 or 6 and don't have to be to work 'til 8am three mornings and 9am the other two. I SHOULD be able to get lots done, shouldn't I?
Most people work a full week and get so much done, have a clean house, exercise and have time to do fun stuff. so I have no excuse. I consider that I should begin my day with some exercise. Everyone says you should exercise an hour at least four days a week. So that is what I SHOULD do. ...
![]() Next...well to keep me organized and still have a half decent looking home Flylady is a great help. I used to follow her plan which includes morning and evening routines and daily "missions" from Kelly and still follow it half heartedly. All these only take 15 minutes. As she says...
![]() Next SHOULD follow a good breakfast, after all it's the most important meal of the day right? That would just take a few minutes to make a bowl of cereal or toast, a piece of fruit and zap an egg in the microwave. Say 15 minutes at the most.
![]() Well when I took my art class, the instructor said if you want to be a real artist you must paint at least 15 minutes everyday...I haven't painted for over a year and figure...as I lay in bed....I SHOULD begin doing this again and get out of this slump I'm in.
So all totaled (1 hour exercise, 30 minutes for flylady tasks, 15 for breakfast and another 15 for painting) this should come to 2 hours. So getting up at 5:30 this would put me at 7:30 not quit enough for a quick shower and dress and 5 minutes to walk to work. So getting up at 5am WOULD. But what DID I do when I get up each morning? Well put on the kettle, feed the cat and dog, let the dog out, and put on a pot of tea. Then I put on some old clothes so I can exercise, clean the house, paint etc. Still thinking I have LOTS of time...but first, I need to have a "spot of tea" to fully wake up and since I can't do these other things with a hot mug in hand I'll just check the weather forecast. While I'm at it I'll check the local news...oh well might as well check out the national CBC news too...hmm interesting, lets see what comments people made on that article....and while I'm at it see what's going on in the States so I check out CNN. Oh...my face-book...wonder who's on now...I send a message to a friend, nice pictures too...Well what is going on in blog land. Got to check Spaces of course...who left a new blog...I go to check one or two or... Hmm..teas cold, need to add some hot, let Homer in, let cat out, put some wood on the fire...where was I? I wonder if I got any important mail in my "in" box...ha-ha that's a great joke to start the day, one more to read then I'll just drop by one more blog....I look at the clock...Oh my it's 10 after 7! And I still have to shower, dress, no time for breakfast 'cause I'll have to unlock the Community Center and turn up the heat on the way to work! Shut down computer, let in the cat, let out the dog, hop in the shower and I'm off! So there you have it. All I SHOULDA done, all I COULDA done and if I changed my morning habit, all I WOULDA done! I can't give up my computer friends, I know, get on the computer in the evenings, I planned that before but that's another story of more "SHOULDA, WOULDA & COULDA" and what I actually DID. ![]() 07 marzo Prepare for a long, rambling blog if you dare!
Saturday
Well Saturday was my "big" trip to town
After lunch I went to Indigo while Paul "browsed" in one of his favourite shops, the Bulk Barn. He's an avid baker and loves to rambled and buy the various snack foods. Well there was no books at all on Sea Glass so that was stroked off my list of books I wanted. I also was considering buy a new Bible in "The Message" version. My bosses were raving about it and also our minister. Well all they had in that department was one New Testament so passed that by. My other choice was a book on Sign Language. Now will help from the clerk I was led to a shelf with about 1/2 dozen books to choose from. As Millie already gave me her ASL books with dictionaries and I had a small handbook, I found two books that we're different than a dictionary. One has a DVD included which I never got a chance to look at yet and also teaches about gestures etc. the other is a phrase book. What I've been learning is really called English Sign. True ASL doesn't translate word for word like I've been learning so far.
While I was at the book store I also bought a book for my dad for his new computer he got a couple months ago, a Mac. The book is called "Mac for Seniors" adults 50+. (It was his birthday on Thursday)
As I said in my last blog, my B-I-L, Freddie was going to have an operation. We went to the hospital, our second last stop, to visit him. At the main desk we found out what room he was in, #209. I guess us "seniors" more hard of hearing then we though, as we walked down the ward looking for his room we came to "room" 209....on the door it said "SHOWER". O.K....that wasn't right so we asked the nurse what room and was given it, 239, but Freddie had just came out of surgery and would be another 1/2 hour in recovery. We knew he was having surgery but didn't know how soon so we were quite surprised. He got along good, and they removed his appendix while they were in the general area. He got home yesterday and though a bit weak is recovering just fine.
We left for town at 9 in the morning and it was nearing on to 8 pm when we got home so I was bushed by the time we got stuff put away!
Sunday and Monday were just my typical days, church and nap on Sunday and work on Monday. Though I was able to get some of the housework done in the morning that got neglected Saturday 'cause I wasn't going out to the country with the freezing rain we were having.
Tuesday
A close friend, a lady of 73, passed away on Sunday after a being ill a couple years. She was very active in the community and even more so in our church. Tuesday evening we went to her wake. We got home early enough so I was able to still attend over half my Sign Language class. Attendance has decreased dramatically, once we had a dozen, last week it was just the two of us and this week three.
Wednesday
Wednesday I found it hectic. I worked at the store in the morning but had to leave early to be at Esther's funeral for 1pm. As I clean for my dad on Wednesday afternoons, Paul dropped me off on the way back home at Dad's home.
Tomorrow was his 90th birthday, since that day was going to be full for me too, I brought his birthday presents, the book and a painting I did. It was funny with the painting...I had two that were my favourite and was debating which one to give him. In the mean time I posted one on "face book ". Well Dad saw it and said he loved it and wouldn't mind having it. (Dad has never asked for anything before) Without a thought I said "It's yours."
Well we had our final service in our old church in Murray River that evening. It was our closing or "Decommissioning" service. Lots of my own memories flooded my thoughts as the service progressed. It was the church Paul and I were married in, I remembered going to Sunday School and CGIT as a teen. I could hear the echos over the years of the Sunday School classes I taught and visualized our three darling, rascals as they behaved as siblings do when they are supposed to keep quiet but can't in church!
Thursday
Thursday was pretty predictable other than a Session meeting in the early evening. Again I had the devotion, I think I'll continue to have as the others say they really enjoy them, I'll believe they are being honest and not getting out of doing it themselves...haha. We got home in plenty of time to pop up some pop corn and get settled on the couch for Survivor: Tocantins!
Friday
Friday was just work, no extreme weather to keep me home from the shore in the morning...drats...and work as expected at the store in the afternoon. Oh yeah we also watched "Ghost Whisperer" last night!
So there you go...my week. I really should get in the habit blogging more often through the week then it won't get so long!!!
And how was your week?
Hope you are having a great weekend!
28 febbraio Going Christmas shopping!?![]() Just dropping by for a short visit. As the heading says...I'm going Christmas shopping. No I'm not getting started on next Christmas, this will be my first trip to town since Christmas. I got a gift certificate for Indigo from my son, Chad & his wife Adina for Christmas and I am going to spend it today. Not sure what book I'll get, it's a toss up between a book on Sea Glass, a new bible, "The Message" or an up to date book on Sign Language. Millie sent me her old books last year, they are wonderful books but as she can tell you they are 20 years old and like everything else, times change as well as ASL signs.
![]() My brother-in-law is also in the hospital. As you may recall Freddie's wife passed away a short while ago. Now he is in the hospital. He has had a lot of pain from a blockage in the bowel, finally they are going to operate and hopefully get him fixed up.
This morning is mild but by this afternoon we are having a sudden drop in temperatures and may get freezing rain and/or snow. Paul will be driving so I feel safe with him. :) I don't think spring will ever come. The plows and snow blowers were busy in the village yesterday widening the roads in anticipation of more snow. The banks are so high now they will take forever to melt when/if we do get a run of mild weather!
My "speech" went OK. Now he wants us to make up another one for next week! Anyway it makes me learn better and be able to use ASL or English Sign language in sentences!
Well hope you all had a good week and even better weekend. I have to shower and get ready for my rare shopping trip. So I won't be around to visit today, maybe Sunday afternoon or early in the morning.
Take care.
Hugs, Faye
22 febbraio My "exciting" week![]() Spring is still a long way coming, we are expecting another snow storm and blowing snow again tonight. At least we had one day through the week where it was mild and some of the snow melted and was actually running down main street.
Yesterday I got my hair cut. I usually go on a Wednesday but my hair dresser has her monthly cancer treatment this coming week. Her cancer is gone but she said this treatment strengthens her bones and protects her. I'm so glad she is well enough to do a few clients. I sure missed her when she was so sick and I had to go to someone different. She has been my hair dresser since I was in high school and she just got her licence. So we go a long way back!
For my ASL class I have to give a little "speech" about my self. I was told I had to make a new one when I commented I would just use the one I made last year, so I have a bit of homework. Almost forgot it so that is what I have to do this afternoon!
Well that is about all of the "excitement" in my corner of the world this past week. I see I have been slack with visiting (again) so that is the other thing I have to do today along with my ASL speech. So I hope I'll "see" all of you before the day is over! The way the weather keeps changing, forecasting more snow every time I look so, unless the temperature climbs a few degrees above freezing and we have more rain than snow, I may have a snow-day in the morning. Monday & Friday mornings I still do home-care out in the country but that won't prevent me from walking to my job at our local store in the afternoon.
This is a rendition of our projected new church before any building was started last fall, the architect took a picture of the site and placed the building in it so even the original trees and landscape are included:
and here it is today completed except for paving which of course can't be done at this time of year:
Here is a better picture of the new window made for our new church (taken by Paul in the day time) it is a great tribute to the three original church buildings:
15 febbraio Winter RantWARNING: If you are looking for an uplifting, enlightening blog today I'd advise moving on.
I am suffering from the winter blahs and need to vent here.
![]() I am so tired of winter! Tired of winter boots, hats, scarves, mitts, shovels, snow scrapers. Tired of the snow and cold and walking like a penguin on icy roads. Tired of shoveling the walk or walking through it if it isn't shoveled. By the looks of the snow banks it looks like it will still be a long time before we even see grass or bare ground. Now some of you, my dear blogging friends, are into the gardens digging around shoots of plants. How I envy you!
P.E.I. is such a beautiful, heavenly place in the summer, but winter just sucks and goes on and on and on. Well I'm taking in the welcome matt, winter has worn out it's welcome and has well past it's "winter wonderland" beauty. There is just no beauty in old dirty, crusty snow banks and endless days of grey skies!
O.K. I'm done ranting....
06 febbraio "The Chair"My brother posted a picture on facebook. It's of his two sons taken a year or two ago. The interesting part is the chair they are posed in, we grew up with this chair no matter where we lived.
Here is a much, much earlier picture of the same chair with two other children sitting in it. This was taken in 1957 (not 1857 Carol, that was a typo!) when my brother was just 8 months old and I was three!
Maybe someday my brother's grandchildren will have their picture taken in this same chair....
ASL was cancelled on Tuesday...another snow storm hit. I am so sick of winter and we are only halfway done.
Last night we had a Session meeting at church. Nothing marvelous in itself, what was noteworthy was that it was in our NEW Church! Sorry I didn't keep up with pictures of it's construction started last year. But it is finally finished enough that we are having our first church service in it on Sunday. It is so big compared to what we were used to. It replaces three separate churches, two are closed now and in the process of selling them. The pews are soft and comfy, the bathrooms are big and roomy, a large church office, separate Sunday School rooms. The kitchen will be big and very up to date. It isn't finished yet, that is "phase 2" and will be completed as more funds become available. Phase 3 will be building on a hall sometime in the future.
I've posted some pictures I took while waiting for choir pratice to finish before our meeting. Things were just moved in the last couple days so you will note cardboard down on the new floor, empty boxes and the furnishings still sparce as some things still have to be moved in. Three stained glass windows were incorporated from two of our churches. A new one was designed to represent the three original churches united with the dove representing the Holy Spirit.
We've had a number of names submitted for our new church. The list was downsized to ten and all were able to cast their votes for their three favourite names. In about a month our new church name will be announced. My submitted name was one of the top ten. I won't reveal what it was until after the vote is finished. Dad's submission was also on the voting list. I picked his as my second choice before he told me it was his. Whatever name we choose as a congregation will be nice as right now we are just known in the communities around as "the new United Church on the Harbour road in Murray River".
Well it's Friday again! Hope you all have a great weekend!
30 gennaio I am so ready for the weekend...and it's here!![]() As much as I love my job I am so ready for the weekend. I haven't made any plans. Sometimes that's a good idea, then other times I'm liable to let it just slip away not really getting anything done. The only thing on my agenda, that I know of, is to find or compose a devotion for a church Session meeting due Thursday. I don't want to be struggling the last minute or during the week trying to find something so that will be my task to accomplish. I'm thinking of just doing some light work, picking/straightening up and cleaning the floors. I may tackle some of the clutter in the basement. I'd much rather call it the "dungeon" it is a gathering place of all that "good" stuff that we either use seasonal like Christmas decorations and gardening stuff. Much of it is stuff we are hanging on either for one of the kids or "may use someday". Then there is the stuff that's too good to throw out but we really don't need or use. Instead of a junk drawer or closet we are "blessed" with a full basement!
![]() This is 30 years of collecting. Now when I was growing up we didn't have this problem. My dad was in the air force...yeah, I'm an "air force brat" ha ha. We moved quite often, about every two years so the stuff we no longer used didn't move with us. We lived in a house only once during those years the rest were apartments. If we were lucky there was a storage unit in the complex but that was small enough that things could only multiply so far. Not so today. We are lucky to have this extra storage space...yeah right. It's become so bad that I often wake early thinking of where to put what or give away where or just toss. Please don't mention "yard sale". I've been there and the time it takes to gather and organize everything to sell at give away prices is just not worth the trouble. Clothes I can take in to a couple of chain stores that have bins just for clothes but for the rest of the stuff I don't know. Much of it is Paul's territory so unless I chain him to the basement I find it hard to sort through without him with me.
![]() Okay ....stop now Faye, most people probably got bored and aren't reading this blabbering any longer. This is how my mind functions after a weeks work with some poor nights sleep. I might have come up with a more interesting blog if I'd have waited 'til I was well rested on Saturday morning.
I'll let it rest now and just wish you all a great restful weekend! 25 gennaio A new week and back to normal....![]() Well this week will bring me back on schedule...with the wake and funeral midweek I couldn't get on track but after an uneventful Saturday and lazy Sunday this should be a normal week...well wants normal for me anyway...lol. There was no graveside service as the ground is froze like a rock and the cemetery is covered deep in snow. So the family will have to bear more grief come spring when Joyce will be buried.
![]() Saturday I cleaned the house, caught up on my blog walking and did some on-line reviewing of my ASL. I don't think I'll ever get it down pat and be able to communicate in sign language, I really need to take a more in-depth course and have someone to practice with on a daily bases.
![]() My son has encouraged me to get moving again on the treadmill before work. Today was the 3rd day. Friday I didn't have to be to work 'til 9 and I didn't work Sat. or Sun. so I was able to get on the treadmill. Monday will be the same as Friday but Tues., Wed., and Thursday I have to be at work at 8. Since I'm with the public those days I also have to shower and dress and makeup. I don't think I am strong enough to give up my morning tea and computer time to adapt unless I rise another hour earlier but that would make rising about 5 am instead of 6...ugh
![]() Today was a lazy day, begin by surprising myself and not waking 'til almost 7 am. After a spell at the computer I went to church, had lunch then topped it off with a nice afternoon nap. Now I am back to a cup of tea and writing a late Sunday blog. I really need the nap on Sunday as since I'm an "early to bed, early to rise" person I "have" to stay up to watch Desperate Housewives! We are on a later time zone than most people. DH starts here at 10 and isn't over 'til 11, past my regular bedtime. I don't watch much TV but this one I'm addicted to along with Ghost Whisperer and Survivor. Usually I am reading when Paul is watching his shows...CSI, Without a Trace etc. I am aware enough to sometimes watch parts of them but don't turn the TV when he isn't home, just bury my nose in a book. Which reminds me that I'm out of reading material and will have to make a visit to the local library tomorrow evening. The last book I read had only a one week lone "The Shack". There was a long wait for this book, I have been on the waiting list since last summer!
Hope you had a great weekend and ....
![]() 17 gennaio Sad news in the family this morning![]() I was settled into my usual Saturday morning routine: I had my morning cup of tea and was just settling in to catch up on my blog walking. I only got as far as visiting Sherry when the phone rang early this morning. My brother in law, Freddie, (it's his boat that he takes us out mackerel jigging in the summer if you recall my stories) called in tears his wife, Joyce passed away just an hour earlier. His sister in law Brenda (wife to his other brother Larry who died just 3 years ago Jan. 14) was staying there for the night as she often does since her husband passed away. Well Joyce called her to help her to the bathroom then since she has been sick for many years with breathing problems asked for her mask. Joyce then just collapsed. One son lives with them but the other son, who is with the fire department arrived with the first response. He performed CPR on her but by then it was too late. We arrive as soon as we could (we had to give the car a boost to get it started in this extreme cold). When we arrived the police were there. Shortly after the funeral home arrive and took Joyce away. We stayed until Terry and his family arrived. A snow storm is forecast for Monday so though arrangements aren't made yet we are looking at Tuesday or possibly Wednesday for the funeral.
Like I said in my last blog "boring is good". This is one thing that happens when boring isn't happening. I may be around later, I'm kind of set off schedule for a Saturday morning as you can imagine.
This is a picture of Freddie in the summer during a happier occasion:
![]() 15 gennaio BRRR!!![]() Yeap...we are in a deep freeze as is much of the northern hemisphere! It's going to stay like this until Monday. Today it's -17C (-1.3F) and feels like -28C (-18F). BRR!! I'm glad I got a nice warm jacket, it's going to be a cold walking to work this morning.
I need to get a life. I am excited because we are getting a new Pepsi cooler for the store this morning...isn't that pitiful?
![]() Tonight we have a church meeting and I'm called on to do the devotion. Yesterday I got my hair cut, it's a bit shorter than I'd like.
O.K. I'll cut this short and save you the pain of my boring week. Boring can be good I guess, it's a rest from problems that can occur or rushing around with too much on my agenda.
Have a great rest-of-the-week and keep warm!
Hugs, Faye |
