October 23 Checking in on Tuesday
O.K. so I'm doing a bit better getting a blog sooner! This morning I forced myself to get the housework done really fast without getting bogged down in getting rid of the hidden clutter that most of us had. Did the dusting, vaccuuming, cleaned the fridge, stove, counter tops and polished the appliances. The scrubbing was done Saturday so I didn't feel it needed it. Paul changed the bed yesterday and got the wash done. (So much less wash since Megan moved out).
So now since I don't work today the rest of the day I can do the other stuff like this blog!! It's supposed to go up to 18'C this afternoon so if the grass drys (heavy dew last night) even though it will be cloudy I'll get another bed or two cleaned up. I still have two roses beds, most of the hosta (that were still nice and green earlier so I didn't cut back), my rock garden and a bit along the front of the house, and also the small pond we put in. Yesterday the temperature was amazing. After I came home from my morning job I actually had to put on shorts and T! We also had to remove the duvet I put on during a cold evening last week and replace it with the quilt I had on for the warmer weather. I'd love for fall to continue ever so long with a short winter (say February only) then head straight to spring! It's possible with the odd weather we've been having but probably not a realistic hope!
Last night I helped two women who have been planning a community Halloween party all summer. This is planned for this coming Saturday night. They have done an amazing job in planning and buying stuff for the party. Our club, the Murray Harbour Drama Club & Friends, which aren't really into drama anymore just community involvement, will refund any expenses. The actually decorating and stuff still needs to be done. Last night we began to partition off the long basement under the community center with black table cloths to make a dungeon/ haunted house affair for the older kids.
Last year the party was slack due to only a days preparation and games just on the spur of the moment. Games and such for the smaller kids with snack time etc for all upstairs. This can't be decorated etc. until Saturday morning due to other events on Friday day and evening at the centre. We still alot to cover to finish the basement activity. Plans are to do it Wednesday evening. It doesn't look great with the lights on but all this will be in the dark excluding random lights on various things. The drama club, when they did "drama" had stocks made so we will have someone in it, a noose is hanging from the ceiling, a large coffin and graveyard will be set up with a real person coming out of it. They even bought a smoke machine to give it a really eerie feel. And there will be "body parts" to touch and feel as they enter and exit a darkened room. It's a lot of work but I'm excited to see the reaction of the kids who will get to go through it.
The tide is low at 2 pm so I hope to get to the beach to find out what hidden "jewels" the tide washed up this afternoon. I'm thinking maybe now I'll make a mosaic picture. I've filled a large glass cookie jar with clear, 2 quart perserving jars of brown, 2 of green, 1/2 jar of like greens/blues, a jar of pottery pieces and some very small zipper bags of various other colours all sorted out individually. I have lots of shades of greens, clear and brown, a bunch of light blues and greens with enough blue to add some contrast along with a bit of yellow, mauve and deep turquoise. I'll just need to figure or "google" what medium to stick them on with and whether to use canvas, wood or glass as the background. I think they'll "paint" a nice nature picture.
October 18 Thursday![]() Well the best laid plans....and here it is Thursday already!
I made Cabbage Rolls for the Potluck Supper last weekend. I didn't go but Paul said by the time the helpers (he & others) were ready to eat there was just a small end of a roll left...so they couldn't have been too bad. I went instead to a housewarming of another church member and her four kids. Actually she has been only been going to our church just the past year and is already team teaching the gr. 1& 2 class alternate weeks when she has the kids and can bring them.
Sunday was the de-commissioning of our Little Sands Church. It's a quaint little country church overlooking the Strait. It has no water (only a chemical toilet under a stairway!) so water had to be brought it for tea/coffee for a luncheon following. I went in the choir only 'cause Paul was going .....but ended up a fuse blew with the choir lights which also was the same fuse as the outlit for the tea. Paul was the one in charge of the luncheon so he spent most of the rest of the service trying to fix that!
Even though the lights in the choir went it didn't hurt the organ 'cause all we have in this church is an old fashioned pump organ! There is a big floor furnace up front...I was standing over it, nice and warm and cozy, talking to the minister how it reminded me when Chad was just a toddler and fell during children's time and burned his hand's enough to blister....Rev. stopped my story to ask me to move off the grate....she said it wasn't working properly (we haven't used this church in over a year) ....that flames tended to burst up out of the grate and she would rather I didn't catch fire. (She was turning off the furnace as soon as it warmed up and the service started.)
Well after church, lunch, clean up, I asked Paul if we could drive the opposite way ...there is an old, ancient house I wanted to take pictures of. Some painting have already been done by others....mostly water colours...I was hoping ot maybe paint it myself. I did get lots of pictures but it has fallen in so much I think it may be to distorted to make a good painting. At least I did get pictures before it fell down completely, I don't think it'll last another winter. Oh and also Homer and I went for a walk Sunday afternoon up the trail a few miles and back...the first time for over a year on this trail.
The rest of the week has been quiet....just work, beach combing early to add to my "ever growing but don't know what I'll do with them" beach glass collection, and a boring church meeting last night. Supposed to be sunny today so when the grass dries I'll have to continue preparing/cleaning up the flower beds so it will be so much easier in the spring.
October 12 Friday
Now that I don't work on Saturday I can appreciate Friday knowing I don't work tommorrow! It' was a nice weekend with all the kids at home. Krista & Megan shared the new BYOB I got. It was nice to here there quiet talk and giggles after we went to bed. It gave me a smile remembering them as children, minus the scabbles and requests for water and stories.
Chad was in the other room on the futon, of course we let him have a "friend" sleep over, his wife, our third "daughter" Adina.
Homer even had a friend over, Chad and Adnina's Amstaff Terrier. They are getting to tolerate each other, no fighting amonst the two this time! They are both so jealous and possesive.
Our minister's mother died Saturday night though Rev. Beth did make the church service. I didn't work Wednesday afternoon as we went to town to the funeral. I thought I'd have to go to the church on Thursday pm but Rev. Beth won't have the bulletin outine ready until today so I'll just type it up and photocopy it all this afternoon. She won't be able to check for errors like she usually does. Yesterday we went to Montague for our new glasses. It took quite a few trys before the lady had my glasses adjusted so I could see straight. I have one ear lower than the other, not noticeable to others just when I get new frames. Since it's supposed to rain at least until Wednesday I spent all afternoon in the garden. The first of the week we started to notice a change in the leaf colours finally. But with that our weather is much cooler but the afternoons are just perfect for outdoor work.
Still mulling over what casserole to make tommorrow for our church's Harvest Potluck supper. I picked up a bunch of ingredients that I won't be able to buy at our corner store. I do have a list of ideas though I got from "Company's Coming" Potluck recipe book. Other than that the day will be mine. There isn't even a Sunday School lesson to prepare 'cause we are having a special de-commissioning service at our Little Sands church. I should write blogs more often as these get lengthy when I try to fill in a whole week don't they?
October 04 My first Thursday off!
Well this is my first Thursday home since the spring! I have been so relaxed this week, I didn't know how stressed I have been 'til I found I have been sleeping in 'til 7 am all week. I guess I woke early, 4:30- 5:30 all summer, knowing that was about the only time to get "me" time. I've been busy getting the rooms ready for all the kids coming this weekend. Not sure what days they will be home I think they may overlap. Usually we have our Thanksgiving meal on Monday but to assure at least some of the kids are still home we will have it Sunday. Megan and Steven are coming out Friday but aren't sure if they will be here past Saturday. Krista is coming Saturday and is off all weekend but I think she works Monday (Chris, here boyfriend works so can't come) Chad and Adina are coming I think on Saturday (they'd have classes on Friday) haven't heard what day they have to go back to NS. Tuesday was our 31st anniversary, we didn't do anything special but just having the house alone to ourselves for the first time was special (Chad was born shortly after we moved into our house 28 years ago!) In 1976 we went on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton for our honeymoon, then the leaves were at their finest. Well fall has only arrived by the calendar. The leaves have only a hint of yellow and rust. We just had one frost so far that I had to scrap the car windows. Other than that morning (Monday) it has been almost summer weather, in the low 20's . As I speak early this morning it is already 17! Is this global warming or what? I have worn shorts and Capri almost every day and we leave the bedroom window open and still often find it too warm! Well I guess I'm going to get some stuff done around here, maybe garden a bit when the grass dries. Since I don't work today I will pause and try to get around to as much blogs as I can as the day goes by.
