April 30 Setting Day for Lobsters!
Well it is THE big day in our fishing little village... it is "Setting Day".
That means the fishing boats are being loaded up with the traps that have been gathering on the wharf the past couple weeks. These will be taken out and set. Tomorrow many will taste the first of the seasons lobsters! Anyone who can and is available are down at the wharf loading the boats. This includes Paul and Megan. Megan may look small but she is strong. She even goes out on the boat with Paul's brother Freddie to throw the traps over. Paul is on the wharf baiting traps then loading when the boat comes in for another load. I used to be able to see all the excitement but with trees growing larger and a piece built on a house down the hill all I can do is hear the voices and the rumble of the boats coming in/out.
A couple days ago we were in doubt if Freddie could take his boat out. He was in the hospital with a blockage of the bowel and in a lot of pain. Now he may just be taking a lot of pain killers, I don't know, but he checked himself out yesterday, it's hard to keep a fisherman down when the boat is involved!
Anyway I won't be involved today in this, I never am. I am heading out to work at the shore, then am doing some cleaning for a friend also out there. Hopefully I'll finish today and get tomorrow off.
Hope your week is off to a great start!
![]() April 27 Friday![]() Nothing going on today other than the regular: I worked this morniing, going to my dad's for lunch and a visit then working at the church 'til 5. Went to a Session meeting at the church last night than came home, watched Survivor and head off to bed.
Our minister's sister has cancer. She is having surgery next week so Rev. Beth is going to go out to BC for a couple weeks to be with her. I went to high school in the same grade with her though we didn't get around with the same group. It's scary when people my age that I knew are getting terminally ill. It makes me realize my own mortality can be just as fragile. Wish cancer will someday be as treatable as diabtes and other previously life threatening diseases that we are now immunized against.
So we will need someone to fill in while she is away. We are getting a supply minister in hopefully for the 13th but to save money I offered to do the message on the 20th if someone else does the prayers etc. So now I got myself into that. I had done a few services years ago. I took one year of Bible college and a few home courses from the church. But I cannot just through something together like a minister can. At least we go by the lectionary so after reading the scriptures and prayer something will come to me! Both the other women that is helping and myself can't do it the 13th because we both will be teaching. The 20th will also be our Sunday School closing, so the kids will be in church and no classes that week. Which also means the church will be full of parents, kids and the regulars. Anyway I'll get by.
Hope you have a great weekend!
April 26 Thursday![]() Not much going on here but I figured I bet "check-in". Monday I left for work in the morning with a winter coat...in the afternoon Paul & I went to town wearing light jackets...even that was too much , it turned almost hot. Well hot enough to leave the jackets in the car. Even the stores were uncomfortably warm since they never had any air conditioning on yet. On the way home I got a lemon-lime slushy at Dairy Queen to cool off!
Paul had a doctors appointment so I tagged along to do some shopping. I really needed jeans. I had lost some weight and my old ones were falling off me. I ended up get two pairs of jeans, two summer skirts and two tops! I am not a shopper and hate trying on clothes but this will make me feel good after frumpy, dull winter clothes.
The rest of the week has not been hot but has been comfortable and sunny. And...no snow. I guess Colorado got hit this week by a biggy so anything is possible with the weather this weird spring!
A friend of mine is going away for a few days and has asked me to do some cleaning for her. She doesn't want just anybody in her house so she is paying me more quite well. I won't be starting work at the winery 'til June so I need the extra cash at this time.
I did get some of the beds raked this week. Things are starting to sprout, but other than the crocus and another little blue flower nothing is up blooming. The tulips, daffodils and a some lilies are pushing up out of the soil.
Face-book seems all the rage now. I'm not sure how to use much of it yet but almost everyday someone is asking me to be their friend. Four are blogging buddies and the rest are family. My kids all use it. They think I'm not "safe" writing on spaces but if they are using face-book I guess it's OK...he-he. Megan thinks I'm saying too much in my blogs and someone is going to come and take me away or murder me in my sleep or something. I guess those possibilities could happen but then I never would have met so many friends across the land would I? There maybe some weirdos in my on community that see my every move and could do the same thing! Anyway I happy to be here in blogland and will also use face-book as I learn how to utilize it.
Have a great Thursday everyone.
April 21 Saturday![]() Happy Saturday! This graphic describes how undecisive I have been most of the day updating my space! Carol passed the word from Rusty that my space was hard to get to and may have possible been the theme I used. So yesterday I changed it and today I spent more time than I should changing the theme...so change a co-ordinating picture....didn't like that so changed another picture...another theme...another picture...I could have spent the time more wisely visiting everybody! Crack my self over the head...I can't leave well enough alone I just have to have my space representing me and my mood at the time. Don't know yet if I am happy with it but there's a time to call it quits!
Well the picture describes our change in the weather, I can really believe spring is here. The weather is sunny and dry, just patches of snow here and there.
After getting through some household chores this morning I went for a bit into the garden to see what I might do. I got the rose bed cleaned up, that wasn't too hard because of my cleaning it so well last fall. Then I went around to the front and began a bed near the house...of course it is spring and the birds are singing and all sorts of motors getting tuned up for the season. I was lost in thought when I heard a bird chirping. It was a strange chirp, I thought maybe it's nest was invaded or a hawk was around....then a light bulb went off...I had Honey Garlic Sausages cooking in the toaster oven. The "bird chirping" was the distant call of my smoke alarm! The sausages were done just right though. So after being back in the house for a few minutes began to feel the chill. It's not really as warm as it looks out today, so that will be my gardening for today I guess.
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend whatever weather you may be having! April 17 Tuesday
Not a long blog today. I really must start planning/sketching for a new painting. (Thanks for the nudge Carol). I haven't done anything for a long time. The rest of my week looks busy with work and some community involvement. This has stemmed from a meeting for Canada Day we had last night that needs attending to this week. Also, Paul has "volunteered" the Sunday School to do the service this Sunday since our minister will be on study leave. So I have to help him with that. I'm getting my much needed hair cut Thursday in the afternoon and Friday I'll have my bi-annual Mamogram (or "breast press" as we jokingly call it!) The next appointment available was not until October, don't want to take the chance, you never know and the sooner the better if anything showed up. So that means I'll have to find another time to get my church job done if we are too long in town on Friday. Anyway I'm out of here while it's quiet. (Paul took my dad into town for an eye appointment) The next thing it will be time to start supper. I may get around to blogwalk later. Have a great day! April 15 Sunday![]() The lull in our Friday storm, was not a lull but the end of the storm. We only got half the snow predicted. I guess I drove home in the worst of it! By one o'clock I thought I'd go to the church, Paul would tell me if the weather got bad at home and I would try to get as much done as I could. Well it ended up I was able to get the bulletins done and most of my other work in the three hours I was supposed to work. Only I went in an hour early so left at four instead of five.
Yesterday I decided to clean the house in the morning then when I got some volunteer stuff out of the way I would have the rest of the day to myself. Well by the time I made the tickets and posters for the drama's play, did my Sunday School lesson and made the lesson props/craft etc. it was time to put on the corned beef dinner. The next thing we were eating supper. Did up the dishes then Freddie came later after visiting his wife, Joyce who is still in the hospital. After he had some corned beef dinner at our place we spent the remaining evening playing dominoes with Megan and Freddie.
I said to Paul yesterday that tax credits are given for monetary donations...if the government gave credits for volunteer work we would never have to pay taxes! I know it takes a lot of time but Paul and I love doing things for our church and community. But we've learned through the years when and what to day no to so we only do what we want or feel is important.
The snow from Friday has receded again and I can see my crocus again! Carol & Garth have been having nice warm temps. and has promised to send some warmth and sunshine this way...well not really promised but hope it does. Thanks Carol...I'll be watching for it though the forecast calls for rain all week. Better rain than snow!
Have a great Sunday everyone!
![]() April 13 FridaySo this is spring? It is snowing again! I left early to go out to the shore to work. It had just started snowing when I left about 8:30. I only spent an hour there as it was starting to get nasty. I could hardly see the car at the end of the lane. I only went slow on the way home for the visibility was getting bad and the roads were slippery. Going around a bend I began to slide and met another car on the bend, I didn't loose control but was shaking and glad to drive into the yard. I had left Paul a note so he wouldn't worry but he was just waking up when I got home at 10am.
Megan is still at work at the winery. Her winter tires are on the old car not the one she is driving. If it is bad she will get a drive home with her co-worker who has a truck. They are filtering wine and can't leave it until it is done. Hope she does go home with him, it's a bit out of his way but I'd rather her not attempt to drive. Right now there is a lull in the storm and looks good but it's expected to storm til much later tonight into the morning. I'll be more comfortable when she gets home.
My good blogging buddies Ellen & Curtis are going through a hard time. Ellen has had bad news with her cancer. I feel like I know them personally and my heart goes out to them both. They are a such great loving couple. I pray there intense faith in God and love for each other comfort them during this exceptionally hard time.
Well I get a snow day! The first one this "winter". If it clears tomorrow I'll have to get to the church or we won't have bulletins this Sunday. But as the minister said before not to worry we will get by without them. I accidently took my notes home from a meeting we had this week so I may type them up here at home this afternoon. Then that will be done anyway.
Below are some pictures of the weather this morning. The snow isn't too deep yet but you can see my crocus peeking out from the snow. Such a difference from yesterday when they were enjoying the sun.
Hope you are having a lucky Friday the 13th.
April 12 Thursday
Well I took some pictures outside of my "garden" this morning. Most of last weeks snow is gone so I got some shots of my crocus in the sun that are blooming by the house. Tomorrow I doubt they will be as happy...we are getting another storm tomorrow! Hope the forecast is wrong this week. Homer is also enjoying the warm sunny day as you can see. But the ground where there isn't snow is still much to soggy for garden for my comfort. I think I'll go through some of my book shelves and purge ones I don't want and get some that I do on the shelves. What to do with the old books though? I hate to through them out yet don't like the hassle of a yard sale. The librarian doesn't want anymore at this time also. I'll just pack them up 'til I decide what to do with them. Hope you are enjoying your week! April 11 Wednesday![]() So it was strange but we had our "Easter Sunday" service on Monday. And our "Pancake Breakfast" at noon after church on Monday. It took me over an hour to dig out the car on Monday. It was parked in the lane across from us 'cause our yard was too soft and muddy. The plow ended up pushing all the snow on the side of the road where our car was. Since we took it so easy on Sunday the snow had formed a thick icy crust so I had to chop it up before scooping it out. Well I have muscles aching that never ached before so I guess I needed the exercise!
It ended up due to peoples schedules that our Easter meal was yesterday. Megan was home by then so she was there, my dad, Freddie and Paul and I. We had an informal chicken dinner, with a friendly game of Dominoes after.
If I close my eyes to the snow the temperature feels like spring and the birds sound like spring. It should melt this week only Friday is calling again for "periods of snow"! January the ground was bare, now in April when I'm all keyed up to garden we get winter weather. That's what I get for all the ribbing to my dear friends in Saskatchewan and Manitoba!
Hope you are having a lovely spring day in your neighbourhood. April 09 Monday![]() Well below are pictures of what I faced yesterday morning. So we didn't have a busy day at all, everything was canceled so Paul and I just took it easy all day. Our Easter Service is going to be today, Monday, at 11. Then we will have a Pancake Lunch instead of the breakfast that was planned. I had to to some shifting with my work. May morning job will be this afternoon, and the afternoon job is switched to Tuesday morning. I am an Elder for communion today but also would like to go to the service. We will have our Easter meal tonight. Megan should be home and we are inviting Freddie also since he is alone with his wife still in the hospital. So this morning one of us will have to get the car shoveled out and start the vegetables and get the chicken in the oven.
Hope you had a more traditional Easter celebration without the SNOW!
Hugs,
Faye
![]() ![]() ![]() April 07 Saturday![]() We had a very nice service last night. It was nice though to get home and relax. Paul took of for a game of cards with his friends, his way of relaxing and I got into some comfy clothes and settled down for the evening with a book and a glass of wine. At 9 I watched a new episode of "Ghost Whisperer" then finished my book by 11. After that I snuggled into bed and shut off all alarms. I didn't get up 'til after 7 am which is sleeping in for me. Now I feel all rested.
Paul wants me to help design a birthday cake today for a card playing buddy. She is turning 40 today. I am invited also to the party but think I'll just stay home for quiet evening.
We are supposed to have our sunrise service at Machon's Point at 6:30 am , only about a dozen people attend this outdoor service. I find it so spiritually fulfilling and being the morning person I am I always look forward to it. It is so nice to have the service around a bonfire and watch the sun rise over the water. Then at 11 am we have our regular Easter Service that is usually packed with families of all ages.
Don't know if we will have any of our family there tomorrow, Megan wants to go to church with her boyfriend, Chad & Adina will be in Cape Breton at her home. Krista was thinking she would come but called last night. Her old car died in the middle of the highway. Being Good Friday everything was closed. On top of it , the forecast is a WINTER STORM WARNING! It's supposed to start snowing tonight until early tomorrow afternoon with heavy snow and strong winds. Just when I begin to see little signs of spring this comes! Our only chance is that it may turn to rain. So tomorrow I'll either have a very busy day or be home all day!
I guess this morning I'll get the house straightened up. Hopefully the cake won't take to long to decorate and then I'll have the rest of the day and evening to do "my thing".
LATER:
It's only 8:15 and the brown grass we had a couple of hours ago is now covered with 1 inch of snow all ready! Paul went to the birthday party/card game, it's only a 5-10 minute drive away but if he stays as late as he did last night (after mid-night) he may be staying the night. Now it's calling for 25-30 cm (10-12") along with the blowing snow.
Now it's 10:15 with 3", that's 1 inch an hour, so by morning we will have a foot if it keeps up like it is now.
Goodnight!
Have a great day everyone. Have a Happy Easter!
April 05 Maundy Thursday![]() Hope your day is going well.
Yesterday I felt like I was meeting myself. I did my morning home care job, came home, grabbed lunch, and got dressed for going to the funeral home this evening. Went to the bank then did my secretary job at the church for the afternoon. Then I came home grabbed another quick sandwich and less than an hour after I left the church Paul & I were back there to practice for tonight's Maundy Thursday foot-washing service that he organized. From there we went to Montague to the funeral home, then off to the hospital to visit our friend and Paul's brother, Freddie's wife who went back in again this week. Over to the drug store then a quick stop to pick up the bread and grape juice for tonight for church.
It was almost 10 when we got home so I thought we'd missed American Idol but it didn't start 'til 10. Disappointing again that Sanjaya didn't even make the bottom three and Gina was voted off!
This morning a started a small housecleaning job in the village, not too fancy of a job but the pay is good and the lady is nice to work for. She used to work on the ferry with Paul years ago. Now her arthritis is so bad she can't do much of anything. I may do a couple of hours a week for her.
I reneged on going to the funeral, Paul is a pall-bearer so we wouldn't be sitting together anyway. I just felt too stressed this week with everything else going on so I stayed home. But will be involved in the service tonight. Friday I work in the morning and afternoon, going to Dad's for lunch in between. Then back again to the church for our Good Friday service. Dad thought I wouldn't be working on Friday being a holiday but I said if I didn't work at the church in the afternoon we wouldn't have bulletins Friday or Sunday cause that's my job!
Saturday will be a bread before Sunday services, a 6:30 am Sunrise service (I skip the pancake breakfast that Paul organizes at the church) then the regular 11 am Easter service. Whew!!...See why I feel overwhelmed? But I love the services over Easter it's my favourite time of year. There was also one this afternoon but with one car I would have had to go to the funeral from the church and that would have been another rushed afternoon. Instead I may do a bit of housework after I finish writing this blog or maybe not...I do have an interesting book on the go!
Have a great day!
![]() April 03 Wednesday
Sunday went well, one of the twins brought a bag of micro wave popcorn so that was popped up so they were happy. I thought we would have a long wait at the hospital in the afternoon but the nurse said most came just after lunch, but since we were the second last leaving the church, had an hours drive then stopped at Wendy's for lunch it was 2 pm before we got to the hospital and the waiting room was empty. I just read one page in a book I took and Paul was ready to leave. So that gave us a longer visit with Krista & Chris. We played cards, had supper than we played some more cards & then one gave of Yahtzee. I wish we had played Yahtzee earlier, it was my first introduction to the game. I really enjoyed it...well I won too so that may have contributed to my liking the gave...ha-ha! Yesterday I worked in the morning but I just got in the door and Paul was ready to leave for a doctors appointment also in Ch'town. He had to be back for a meeting at 7 so after some running around getting errands done and a "shopping spree" at Dollarama (21 bucks). We just had time to get some groceries and stop into Kentucky Fried Chicken for supper (Paul's fave but I'll eat it occasionally) before racing home. Had a quiet day...just a bit of housework...lunch of leftover meatloaf before having an afternoon nap. Then it was time to start supper, a boiled dinner from some steaks that were in the freezer that has had past their prime. It turned out good and tender. Did the dishes and that's about the extent of my day. So I'll finish up writing this blog and get around visiting some blog friends while I wait to watch American Idol. That Sanjaya has to go...what ever is going on in the voting is sending a lot of great singer home!
April 01 Happy April Fools Day![]() So far no April Fools jokes have been pulled on me...yet again the only one I've seen so far this morning is Homer my dog! Hmm..I don't know if my Sunday School kids are up to pulling AF jokes yet....I'll have to watch my back...I am so gullible and aways get caught by someone.
Well it was no joke when an Islander surgeon found out through a routine exam that he had contracted Hepatitis C. This was release about a month ago in the news. Anyone who went under his knife the past two years where he "couldn't see his hands" when he was operating, would need to be tested. So 150 letters were sent out.
This happened to be the same surgeon that removed Paul's gallbladder 2 springs ago. Instead of the simpler removal Paul had to have the bigger operation. Yeah...Paul got a letter. The testing is all being done as this weekend. So after church today we are heading to town to the hospital for his blood tests.
But we will make a day of it...Krista has planned to have us for supper and stay for a visit and maybe play some board games. She is making Chicken Kiev so we will have great food and company! Well today is Palm Sunday the beginning of Holy Week. I hope to teach the kids a bit about the whole week since there won't be any Sunday School Easter Sunday. If they will sit long enough without too many interruptions that is!
I didn't get a treat made for them...I tried so hard to make something good yet healthy with my Raisin Bran Muffins last week ... they hardly touched them ... and one even said "Make something good next time."! Anyway I don't think parents would be too happy if they weren't able to eat their lunch 'cause the teacher filled them up with junk.
The sun is shining, the snow is almost gone as I look out the front window this morning.
Hope you have a great day....and unless you are the practical joker....watch you back today!
