Birthday Weekend

I must write about last weekend. It was my birthday on Saturday. I helped Megan at the winery Saturday afternoon. When we got home Krista was already there. We were going camping at the beach, the same beach I do most of my sea-glass collecting in the summer.  We packed up the tent, wood for a campfire, food etc.

The weather was perfect the whole weekend. We setup camp on the beach, past the high tide mark. A pit was dug and lined with rocks we gathered. It's funny, food you wouldn't touch at home was eaten on the beach. We had crunchy hot dogs 'cause of sand that got sprinkled in the wieners and buns. There were a couple of other campfires further down the beach. One group went home early, the second much later. The second group we knew and they graciously came over and offered us there left over wood. Another group came by just before dark. The two men in the group came over to us, both pretty full, they were looking for someone else. Though I knew them I was relieved to know the wife and daughter to one was also there as it was obvious we were staying the night with the tent all set up.

Krista & Megan entertained me, reverting to children again, with there antics making shadows on the steep bank behind us with the lantern. Then we took the lantern and with only it for light we went down the beach huddle around the lantern looking for sea-glass. The other party was still going strong when we snuggled in the tent for the night. It was after midnight before the others left us alone for the night.

When we were up, taking and laughing we didn't take notice of the sounds of the surf. Inside the tent all quiet it became a noisy roar. I wondered if we were camped high enough from the tide that would be coming in.  Megan said, "Mom, you know the tides", I replied telling her I only know the low tides 'cause that's when I go hunting for sea-glass!  We eventually fell asleep but I'd wake up from a dream of all our stuff floating away. The "gentle" sound of the surf was a "roar" when you are trying to sleep! Once when I woke I thought I heard the waves right up to the tent. I looked out but not wearing my glasses and it was so dark I got Megan to look out for me to see where the waves were but we were well up from the shore.

Well morning does come. Krista & Megan would be sleeping for awhile so at 6:30 I got up and dressed.  My tea was reasonably hot so I was comfortable relaxed and enjoyed the rising sun. As the tide began to fall I went up and down the beach gathering sea-glass. When the girls finally stirred a couple hours later we all scavenged and found a lot of blue and all the other common colours.

After a bit we realized we still had time to make it to church. Our friends from New Hampshire were home for a few weeks. As he is a minister and was preaching this morning as our own was on holidays I really wanted to go. Paul finishing up in the shower when we got home. We unloaded all our gear either on the deck or in the kitchen then all three of us had very quick showers and made it too church on time.

Since it was the Northumberland Fisheries Festival weekend we were going out on B-I-L Freddie's boat for the poker run. We were leaving just after one. So as soon as we got home from church we had to quickly change and gather up our chairs, food, bathing suits, life jackets etc.

There were 12 of us in the boat. At a "Poker Run" everyone gets an index card and we have to travel to different wharfs, draw a playing card and try to see who gets the best hand. None of us were even close but that didn't matter. The fun came after as plenty of the boats all gather at "Cahoon's Wharf". It is more of a cove. Lots of boats were their when we came. All had delicious smells coming from BBQ's with people having a great time in and out of the water.  Krista, Megan, Paul, Wendy, Cory and I were have a swim (the water there is so warm compared to the outside waters). Those aboard the boat prepared our supper!

Well the day does come to an end. We arrived back home and unloaded the car. Again dumping everything in the kitchen/deck! For dessert there was a DQ ice-cream cake brought out. This was a nice touch to a very enjoyable Birthday Weekend
(I got very little put away that day, had to work Monday, but Tuesday I finally got my kitchen back together and the mound of laundry hung out with enough time to write the previous blog and .... go hunting for more sea-glass in the afternoon!

'Brilliante Weblog Premio 2008' award

Two very good blogging friends, Bobbie and Curtis, have honoured me with the 'Brilliante Weblog Premio 2008' award. Bobbie was one of my very first blogging friends (or maybe the first?) and lives on the opposite shore of this great country, Canada. She bet me with having grand children. It is so fun to watch the girls grow up. Curtis is a great friend and has the most interesting blogs about things I remember in my own childhood, things I should know or just didn't know. He is a fascinating story teller. I thank both of you!

Now, as the rules imply, I am to nominate seven of my blogging friends. This is very hard. I have so many faithful and wonderful friends here in blog-land, but here it goes (not in any particular order):

Herman is from Holland. We met through Curtis and his wonderful wife, Ellen (who passed away last fall). He has taken me on cybertours of his beautiful homeland. I "visited" some lovely windmills after inquiring about them. He takes so much time with his blogs, videos and pictures and translates them to English so I can enjoy them all the more.

Beth Marie is a sweet lady. She has her own worries and still misses her husband very much who passed away just over a year ago. She still takes the time to visit with a comforting comment when I'm stressed and too busy for  my own good, or just to say hi.

Millie was there when I took up sign language. She gave me some helpful hints and was so generous sending me her own books she used to teach with a number of years ago. She is amazing with the Internet and has so much wonderful things to share on her space with many "rooms" to view.

Sherry is a dear friend who is always upbeat and happy.  It's always a pleasure to have her come by for a visit. She knows how to relax and enjoy time with sisters, grand-kids and family.

Cindy and I have lots of common interests including sea-glass collecting. She and her husband have wonderful daylong outings. She always has a story to tell and pictures of where they were and what they did. I'd love to be in their back seat on one of their adventures!

Ellen is my only blog friend from this Island of ours. We were friends for at least a year before we found out we had a friend in common, Shanna is her son's girlfriend and was a neighbour and like family when she was small. My son and her grew up together and I babysat her for many years. When Shanna was home for a visit she made sure the two of us got together for a real hug and a day together.

Carol and I met through her husband, Garth. We found out we share the same birth year though she is the "older" by two weeks ha-ha! We both have three grown children and share the enjoyment of gardening and reading.

I am frustrated that the rules only let me award seven friends as their are many more I feel deserve this award also. But I have to follow the rules Sad

The Rules: Put the logo on your blog if you wish with a link to me (who awarded it to you)(if you want) on your blog also. You need to nominate 7 other bloggers for the award and put links to them also on your blog. Finally, leave a comment for those you've nominated - so they know they've received a special award!  This is only IF you want to! IF you want to.

Flip Flops

pinkflipsflops.png picture by flyladyfaye

This weekend I have been taking your advice, my good blogging friends, and taking time to relax. This has me thinking of mundane things...like my flip flops. They have been my trusty footwear for the last few weeks.

When I walk down to the backyard pond (small) early in the morning with my tea to feed the goldfish, I feel the dew without getting wet socks and sneakers, just the dew between my toes.

When I slip down to the beach I'm not getting sand in my shoes nor wet sneakers when I get caught by the surf. I'm wearing my flip flops. Just enough protection to keep the rocks from hurting the soles of my feet but open enough to feel the sand and ocean.  Since I'm also wearing shorts, I can wade in a little deeper if I feel inclined to explore or cool off my tootsies.

But what fascinates me is how (unless you go for some of the new top of the line stuff the stores now have) a cheap, simply made piece of rubber (plastic?) footwear summer fashion has lasted for so long.  I remember always having a pair of these every summer as a kid! They were bought for just pennies, 25 cents sounds about right?, at the "5 & 10" or Woolworth's then when I got older it was Kmart. Now here, about a hundred years later (O.K. 54 years this coming Saturday) I'm still wearing them and so are my daughters and son.

Heading out now with Megan and the dogs, Homer & Tito, to search for more seaglass while the tide is low.  Hope you are having a great weekend!

Below is some history of flip flops:

THE 1950's
In America, the first flip flops started to appear after World War II as soldiers brought Japanese zori back from the war, often as souvenirs. The precursor to the modern flip flop really began to catch on, however, when soldiers returned from the Korean War in the 1950's during the postwar 1950’s boom. Soldiers wore these predecessors to what we now think of as flip-flops, which were cheap rubber editions that frequently caused blisters and were so poorly made that they didn’t last long.

As the footwear entered into American popular culture, it became redesigned and changed into the bright colors of Fifties design. As “pop culture,” flip flops became defining examples of an informal lifestyle and came to represent the California lifestyle in general and surf culture in particular.

It seemed like all kids wore them to the beach or the pool and cheap rubber flip flops appeared in every dime store and beach shop. Over time, designs spread from rubber to wood to leather to bamboo and stylized platforms, yet all of them remaining true to the original base design of the early rubber flip flops.

Flip flops were mostly summer shoes for most of the country until the 1990s, when fashion in the workplace started changing and loosening, with experiments like casual Fridays and casual summer dress codes. History of Flip Flops

Just Chillin': Summer is much too short.

My, my, it's over a week since I've been here! I haven't even got around to visiting...shame on me. Embarrassed
Summer is just too short here and I've been taking advantage of the nice weather.

Work: All my (paid) jobs
Also I have been overwhelmed with all my part-time jobs. Since I last wrote I've been asked to help at the winery. I said "yes" but am reconsidering. This afternoon (Saturday) I am helping Megan, my daughter, at the winery, it's just so busy for her to work alone. The tourist season is in full swing and it gets so busy she can even get a chance to have a bit of lunch. But I don't think I want to work on the weekend. I don't work full time but all my jobs break up the weekdays as it is. I only work one or two hours Mon., Wed., and Fri. at home care for two elderly brothers. Then Mon. afternoon I spend 3 hours cleaning my dad's and 2 hours on Thurs. afternoon cleaning for my brother-in-law. Then on Wed. & Fri. afternoons I put on a different hat and work in the church office as secretary for three hours each of those days. This doesn't include if I get a call to put on my "mailman" hat!

First day delivering the mail
I've only delivered the mail the one day. The day after Canada Day. Because of the holiday the mail was an hour late coming. Being my first time alone I was also very slow at sorting the mail. Paul drove for me since it's too awkward with our standard driven car. It was great that I didn't need to worry that I'd pull out into traffic since I had my mind on getting the right mail in the right box.  Also Paul grew up in this area and knows everyone and where they live. Because I was late starting I didn't get to "the boys" until after dinner, this made me also late getting to the church on time. I ended up eating a sandwich for my own lunch at 3 in the afternoon at my desk!  It's only fill in when the regular woman is on holidays or has to take a day off for personal reasons. So that week I worked 21 hours but with it so broken up that it feels like more.

Gardening
Well since the weather finally warmed up, actually too hot and muggy last week, I've been gardening during the morning and evening hours or in shady areas. Sometimes this was early in the morning or on the way too or from a job. Sometimes twice a day. I finally got all the beds free of weeds and dead headed. This was days ago so of course I'm sure there will be more! But it felt good to have it all done even for a short while. Since we only had a short drizzle one day and with no other rain for two or three weeks, the ground is so dry maybe even the weeds will take a break from growing. We also got a load of gravel and I got my exercise shoveling this into the wheel barrow, lugging it and raking it out where we wanted it. The spot around the deck and basement entry between my rock gardens looks really nice now. The old stuff was getting thinned out and the weeds coming through were not attractive at all.

Beachcombing for Sea-Glass
The tide was at extreme lows so when I wasn't working or gardening I would slip down to the beach and comb for sea-glass! This I find so relaxing especially early in the morning before others are on the beach. Just listen to the gulls and waves lapping the shore is calming. But though I find lots of greens, whites and browns I count how many blues I find, even though most are so tiny they hardly count. Then occasionally it makes my day when I find rare and special pieces. I found my second red, though this one was extremely small, a few smoky gray, and some citron pieces. I found at least 1/2 dozen mauve but was most thrilled to find a beautiful, quarter or larger sized piece of delicate pink.

Other stuff
I should take the time to get and post pictures of my sea-glass. Also some new pictures of my gardens. Sorry not today as I made the commitment to work this afternoon.  Ayla is growing quickly...my finger has healed pretty nicely but still sore if I grab or touch it too hard in one spot. Don't know about any housework or gardening today as the tide is low at 10 am and by the time I get back it will just leave me with enough time to shower, dress and eat before heading to the winery to work beside my daughter this afternoon. (I feel so stupid when people ask questions about the wine/winery and my "baby" knows all the answers that I can't answer!)

Sorry this is so long...if you made it this far....this always happens when I don't post for a long time.

Hope you had a great week and wishing you a wonderful weekend!

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Canada-LMG1.gif picture by flyladyfaye

Today in Canada we are celebrating our countries 141th birthday. I must be getting old when I remember well our 100th anniversary!

This morning, instead of the usual afternoon, I'm going up early to clean my B-I-L's. This afternoon our celebrations begin in our community. We wouldn't have it except for all the volunteers who gave their time and talents to get ready for today and all those who will volunteer their time to help with flipping burgers, helping with the games etc.  Paul has been one who has been steadily working for the last week. I got all the signs made. Had some more signs to make last night.  The only thing I have planned is to man the dishwasher for our Strawberry Tea ( strawberry shortcake and beverage).

But of course that can change...ha-ha. A change this year will be some Newfoundland entertainment. We have so many workers and their families here to work for the spring to fall season that we sent out a call for them to sing/play/dance to entertain at our festivities.

Tomorrow will be my first run with the mail route will be tomorrow morning. Paul will help by driving. We have a standard and it's just not possible for one person to handle unless you are have an automatic. Fine with me, then I can concentrate on putting the right mail in the right box and not worry about pulling out in front of traffic or running into someones box or into the ditch if I miss...LOL  I still have my other two jobs of the day, I'll just push them ahead. Then Thursday I have the full day with no commitments and the weather looks perfect too!
