8月31日 Sunday...and my ducks are where they should be.![]() Sorry to leave everyone in mystery my last blog. I just couldn't say too much until I contacted all those I needed to regarding all my other jobs.
It's really not a big thing to others but I am excited. My previous bosses, Mr. & Mrs. B, are owners of our local corner store. I worked there when I first got married for about four years and when Chad was small under the first two owners. I left to finish having my family. Did other jobs for the next 10 years then returned to work before and after they bought the business and worked for 13 years before leaving to tend to my mother-in-law in our home. After she passed away I began first with one part time job, then another, then another, working at the store for awhile just one day a week. I sure missed the daily workings of the place.
Well last week they took me aside and asked me if I would come back to work 30 hours a week, (almost full time) at the store. They want a grocery manager as Mrs. B does the books and Mr. B is busy with the produce and meat department. They have someone to look after the hardware but no one person to manage the groceries. I will be doing the ordering, organizing and looking after the general management of the groceries. They have recently updated and have new cash registers. We always had the old fashioned manual cash registers but now they acquired the kind most stores have that scan items. Along with Mrs. B we will eventually have all the merchandise ready for scanning and entered into the machines.
I know I am going to love back at the store. They are excellent bosses, I can walk to work in just 3 minutes. I'll eventually again have a paid vacation after all these years and Paul will have use of the car more often. I'll get to be in touch with the people again as the come in to shop. I love organizing anything so this is perfect. I've been there before so know what is expected of me and will do my job well as they know. I'll also have a regular weekly pay check again instead of scattered money coming in some weekly othes biweekly or monthly.
So what did I have to juggle? What ducks did I have to get in a row?
Well...
1) I had to call my supervisor and revamp my schedule with "the boys". I'll just be there two mornings a week for a total 3-4 hours instead of 3 mornings.
2) I'll still clean at my dad's but on Wed. pm (can't bail out on my dad of course)
3) gave my notice to the minister & treasurer that I will be leaving as paid secretary though I will still do up the bulletins (only)as a volunteer until Christmas only.
4) tell my B-I-L I'm not cleaning for them anymore
5) tell L. that I can't follow through as her relief anymore delivering the mail. I did it Friday past and will still do one morning for her in Nov.as planned unless she gets a new replacement in the mean time. (I felt really bad as I just started not long ago and she can't get a break without a relief, the mail must go through!)
6) (I also won't be returning to the winery which I worked at every 2nd Saturday this summer)
I had to work fast. Mr. T said when I asked him when they wanted me to start working he said "yesterday" ha-ha. I start this new schedule on Tuesday of this week. So instead of scurrying between six part-time jobs I will just have three partial days from 2 part-time jobs and settle into one regular Monday - Friday jobs (other than the two mornings and one afternoon for the other two commitments) I will be working more hours but less variety (not always the spice of life in this case). Paul thinks I was exhausted most from all the running around from one job to another.
Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!
8月27日 Juggling all my "hats"![]() Yesterday a work proposition was handed to me. It was very tempting. I can't say too much yet...but as you know I have lots of hats I wear during my work week. After this proposition I looked at all my "hats". Some I need to keep, others I can do without. A couple will need to be adjusted to fit better. If I accept this offer, and it looks like the best choice, I will be working more hours but with much more pay with less hats to juggle. Juggling can be exhausting. In the mean time I must make a lot of phone calls, some harder than others and make this work I hope. On paper I think I have it all figured out. Now to get "all my ducks in a row" to make it happen.
![]() 8月24日 Great low tides....going sea glass collecting...again!![]() Bobbie said in her comment that I am sometimes like a hurricane. Well a hurricane has a lull in it's passing. I may work like a banshee but when I have a lull...I know how to use it, and use it well. I had all good intentions to be faithful to my blog yesterday morning and do some visiting, I am so behind in visiting everyone! But the sun was shining and the tide was going to be very low. The beach was calling, the sea glass was singing out to me, so off I went bright and early as the tide was still receding. Homer wasn't near home, usually I will check his favourite haunts but the lure was too strong even for finding my canine buddy. If I leave it too late others will be at the beach getting all the good stuff first.
I did meet a few, one lady I know came up behind me and passed me but on meeting her on the way back but she wasn't a serious collector, mostly just out for a walk as she lives right by the beach. I rarely go to the beach I was going, it's a small beach but good if I just have a 1/2 hour or hour on the way to work. This one I go to lately is a long and "serious" sea glass beach. I met another farther down the beach, she lives just off the beach and has her own wooden stairs coming right down the bank. We had a long talk and I found out she is on the organizing committee for our first Sea Glass festival. It's called "Mermaid Tears Sea Glass Festival" and will be held next summer at the Wood Islands Lighthouse. I am so excited, this is just around a 20 minute drive from my place! She asked if I'd volunteer I said I might. We'll see.
I spent the longest I ever have collecting, I got there at 8 and didn't leave 'til 11am. Paul has a weekend golf tournament. He only started this summer but is enjoying it. He was gone all morning too so I had no one waiting for me or other commitments to make me feel guilty.
On Photo-bucket I searched for "sea glass" and "beach glass". Under "Beach Glass" I saw a photo of a red sand beach. The next one looked even more familiar. So I went to her Photo-bucket and sure enough, a tourist to PEI, had taken pictures of "my" beach! Since it's too awkward to carry a camera around my neck while bending, scrambling over rocks, searching in sand & gravel looking for sea glass I never got any of my own pictures but will share this one of hers. I go a bit farther than the point in the picture. Yesterday I went much farther. The tide is only 1/2 down it this photo it goes out farther but at the highest tide it comes right up to the bank!
![]() The same person also was at our winery, there were group pictures, some with our boss but none of Megan.
Megan is coming with me, or she is actually taking me as Paul thought he better take a turn driving to the golf course in Murray River. Will probably have both dogs with us this morning. We are going a bit later, 9 am, as I can't expect her to get going as early as I would alone. She's not a morning person unless she has to work.
Well it's after 8 and Megan & Paul will soon be stirring so I'm going to sign off and hopefully I'll be back after my beach walk to do another kind of "walk"...blog walk and visit as many as I can!
Here is a link to a cute fictional story about sea glass if you'd like to read it: The Story of Sea Glass 8月18日 "Tracking Fay" [Faye]So my "namesake" is predicted to be a hurracaine as it makes land in Florida. I sure hope it doesn't do much damage or cause any more deaths. It's not spelt with an "E". This graphic I found is starting to make me feel uncomfortable...am I being stalke? lol
Yesterday I made the most of a sunny Sunday and low tide. (hey, it's sunny again today...two days in a row!)
Before the tide fell much, Homer & I took to the beach. I have been going to a different beach lately, this we call "Daly's" beach. It is very long, I really don't know how long as I only go so far, about a mile or so. Well I left early so I could get there before any other avid beach combers got out. If I go too early I can't get down the beach as the tide comes right up to a steep bank. I had it planned well. Not a soul to be seen until later in the afternoon. I was able to get lots of bigger pieces of seaglass. I went at 2:30 and didn't leave 'til it was going on 5 o'clock. I probably would have gone farther up the beach but Homer was anxious for his supper. The weather was perfect, more like a warm sunny fall day, not too hot nor too cold, sunny with a nice breeze blowing.
Hmm...if the remnaints of "Fay" come along the seaboard maybe it's will wash up some really nice seaglass, or long lost treasure!
![]() Have a great Monday!
8月15日 Thank goodness it's Friday!![]() I thought I was just being a pessimist and only seeing the rain this summer. But in the local news yesterday I heard that PEI has had more than 50 days of rain since the first of June! So it wasn't all in my head.
This news only came because of "The Grey Cup and Sauce" parade in Charlottetown this morning. As the news went the weather should be perfect for the parade. It is the finale to Old Home Week. I won't be going but I remember when we used to load the kids in the car and head in to Charlottetown, drive around looking for a parking spot, then walking many blocks to settle in to watch this big event. It would take much longer to get out of town as it felt like the whole population of Prince Edward Island was there, the roads were so congested with cars and people.
I'm glad it's finally Friday. I had a very filled week with work, and going to town on my week day off. The mail run on Monday also set my schedule off so that I had to move one job to Thursday morning. Now the weekend looks like a clean slate as I only work every second Saturday at the winery (not tomorrow...yeah!)
After trying on many pairs of dress pants I finally settle on two pairs...one black and another grey/black striped pair. The clerk got me trying on blazers and tops to go with the striped pair as my blazers I now own are striped/patterned. By then I was tired and was feeling pressured so decided to just leave with the two pairs of pants. I was pleasantly surprised to find there was 20 percent off both pairs. But at the cash I discovered that when changing purses early in the morning I missed adding my gift certificate! I felt so stupid as that was the main reason I went into that store. I got them anyway. Besides it was a good store for woman's wear, "Reitman's", so I knew I'd find something I liked next trip into town.
An Island owned pot (like in dishes) company, "Paderno", was having a "blow out sale". Paul is the avid baker in the house. The last couple years I have been looking at a 7 quart "Cuisinart" mixer for him. It was more that my budget could handle at $799.00. As I was browsing, Paul came up and asked if I wanted to buy his Christmas gift for him. Here he showed me the mixer. The tag said the regular price was $599.00, which was much below what I saw before but the shocker was seeing the sale price of $399! There were just two left, one, white out of the box and missing some attachments and a silver one sealed in it's box. Paul liked the white one so we got a salesperson. He let us take the silver one out of the box and exchange it for the white one so we had all the attachments, book etc. The blender attachement was sitting next to it at another great price. As blender bit the dust a few years back I added this also to my purchase.
Now to keep Paul away from it 'til Christmas!
8月12日 Sunday, Monday & Tuesday![]() Hope you are having a great week.
My husband and I often take in a restaurant after church. Usually it's just a local one or a jaunt to Montague, about 1/2 hour away. Saturday night he surprised me with the suggestion of going to Souris, an hours drive away. I had heard from a couple of avid sea glass collectors about the sea glass that could be found up there. So he said we'd go there to hunt for sea glass. Paul has only been to the beach once with me to hunt for sea glass so this was a pleasant surprise. We stopped at a fish and chip stand in St. Peter's first for lunch. He had heard that it served great fish with home style fries. Then on to Souris. The beach did have a lot of sea glass but I think most of the big pieces were picked over before we arrived mid afternoon. This beach wasn't the same as the ones back home though. I felt kind of out of place. It was right in town off the causeway. Lots of people were milling about, many also looking for sea glass. I'm used to out of the way beaches with hardly a soul or none at all, with just the sand and sea with only gulls for company, not heaving traffic on one side and though we were on the ocean (not the Northumberland Strait where I live) the view was overtaken by all the homes and businesses of a town. It was a nice day spent with my hubby but if I'm hunting for sea glass I much prefer my long walks back home.
Yesterday I did the mail route for my second time. A couple of mix ups but nothing serious. Since it was after 12 when I finished I went home for lunch then when the postmistress returned after one I dropped off mail to post and my paraphanialia I have to put on the top of the car.
Since I was running late with my other jobs, the "boys" (two brothers in there 70's!) and cleaning for Dad, I called Dad to ask if Thursday am would be fine instead. I didn't get much cleaning done for the boys. I did make them a beef stew for supper and did their laundry, but had to haul a chair upstairs to change a bulb and discovered that the refrigerator had died. This meant putting all the meat that hadn't thawed yet in the freezer, throwing out the mushy bags of rhubarb and ice cream, taking out everything from the fridge. The cans and jars of stuff that didn't need refrigeration I put in the cupboard. But had to dump thick sour milk and left over foods and wash those containers. When I felt the back of the freezer it was hot, almost too hot to touch, and what ice and frost that was there when I first found the problem was melting quickly. (I had earlier checked the fuse box, that wasn't the problem) I also had to take time with a call to my supervisor. A new fridge was in order and I unplugged the fridge, I was scared if it was some wiring a fire could start! I got the floors swept and laundry put away but ran short of time and didn't get any of the work done though the floors needed scrubbing badly. I left a note for the other lady that comes on Tuesday and apologized but explained why.
When I got home I brought in the clothes that Paul hung out. Put them away, feed the neighbours cat while they are away, prepared fresh garden carrots and beans, cooked them along with new local potatoes. These were topped off with BBQ'd steak. Ymmm...
Today I'm heading off to town with Paul. With the price of gas we save all our shopping for the city to do in one trip. I got a gift certificate for my birthday from my daughters at a ladies clothing store. I went through my closet last week and discovered all three black dress pants don't fit anymore. They are way too big and baggy as a result in trying to lower my cholesterol with diet and exercise, bonus, weight, belly and hips reduction! We also have to replace bathroom taps, drop off my unwanted bags of clothes that I gathered last week. With these among grocery shopping, a doctors app. and other stops we will probably put in a full day before arriving back home. Oh well just three more days and it will be Saturday when I can get some things done around the house and yard, 8月8日 Have a great weekend!![]() Hope you had a good week. Just dropping by to say "hi".
Nothing new going on here. The weather still calls for rain & showers until Wednesday .....but I did see the sun! O.K. I did see rain too but I like to look at the bright side (pun intended). This gave me an enjoyable evening at the beach.
Actually I re-read the weather forecast and it now says "partly cloudy" (why can't the say "partly sunny" or "sun & cloud" I think they sound more cheerful and optimistic don't you.
Today is the eighth day of the eight month of the eighth year of the century, 08/08/08. Just as many choice to be married last year 07/07/07 we have two weddings in the area today. It's customary here to have wedding on Saturday but these two will be Friday. One's a guy Megan worked with a few years ago, the other a daughter of a church member. I won't be attending but I'm glad the weather may be better than anticipated for their special day.
As you just read, nothing new in my life. As they say "same old, same old".
Have a great weekend!
8月5日 Rainy weekend, rainy day, rainy week![]() In the summer the younger families with kids rarely make it to church. Sunday their was one 4 year old girl, Madison and her 2 year old brother. The minister, during children's time was talking about rainbows etc. You can tell when Madison is thinking hard about something from the way she squints her eyebrows and purses her lips. She was doing this Sunday. It was so cute to hear her announce her interpretation of why it rains:
"God lets the water out of the tub and it comes down." ![]() It has been raining all weekend and no forecast for clear skies 'til possible Thursday. That hasn't deterred this avid sea glass collector. Sunday afternoon, when the tide was exceptionally low I still took to the beach with my little zipper bag. I went to a longer beach that I have been going to when I have more time. I usually travel about a mile. Which is more than a miles walk when I zig-zag up and down it's beach over rocks and sandy gravel. It was a steady drizzle most of the time. I meet a couple of other devoted collectors, the husband makes jewellery he sells at the winery. I save and give the same guy any teeth (animal/mammal, not human!) I find. He cuts them diagonally in small slices, polishes them and comes up with some unusual pendants, earrings etc. I arrived home wet but content to sort through my finds.
Yesterday Megan, the two dogs & I went at supper time. It looked like it was going to clear besides no tourists and the regular beach crowd comes out unless it's warm and sunny. (We did meet a family coming back from digging clams.) We just got partway down the beach when two noisy, long rumbles of thunder came up. We are both scared, including Homer, of thunder/lighting. It was neat though to hear it travel down the Strait beside us. A third rumble came we made a pack that we would just turn immediately and head to the car. The farther down the beach we got though the more tricky would be traveling quickly over rocks and sand!
A steady drizzle began but we persisted. We were quite soaked to the skin when we got back to the car after near two hours! But it was fun sharing a hobby with my daughter.
Today I'm home getting some inside stuff done: the laundry, blogging, and I'll probably curl up and read for a good bit this afternoon. IF it ever stops raining my gardens will need some extensive maintenance with deadheading and weeding!
Hope you are having a great week what ever weather comes your way!
